Scott Brown wins senate race, MA senate seat, Brown defeats Martha Coakley, January 19, 2010, Brown Campaign Could Provide Blueprint for Future GOP Success

Republican Scott Brown has defeated Democrat Martha Coakley to win the MA senate seat held for many years by Ted Kennedy. With 87% of the vote in, Brown leads Coakley 52 to 47%. Even before the election results, it was clear that Scott Brown was doing many things right in his campaign.

From Fox News, January 19, 2010.

“Brown Campaign Could Provide Blueprint for Future GOP Success”

“For GOP candidate Scott Brown to surge in Massachusetts, a state that hasn’t sent a Republican to the Senate since 1972 and is represented entirely by Democrats in Congress, he must have done something right.

And the Republican Party should be taking notes, analysts say, to try to replicate his strategy in races across the country in a year when GOP candidates are thought to be starting out with the upper hand.

Win or lose, the Massachusetts state senator proved that a Republican can be competitive in the bluest of states or districts.

“Every Republican long shot in America — for House seats, Senate seats, gubernatorial contests, is going to shout in unison – Remember Scott Brown,” said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.”

“But Brown practiced a certain practical conservatism in his campaign which appealed to voters, not unlike Chris Christie in the race for New Jersey governor and Bob McDonnell in the race for Virginia governor.

By concentrating on fiscal issues and focusing his criticism on the national Obama administration agenda, Republicans said, Brown brought himself to the verge of an upset.

“The lesson I take away from Massachusetts, win or lose, and New Jersey and Virginia prior to that, is there is no penalty to be paid for opposing the Obama agenda,” said GOPAC Chairman Frank Donatelli. “All three of these elections were nationalized.”

He said GOP candidates have to stand for something and they can’t just present themselves as the anti-Obama candidate. But he said Brown achieved this balance — noting that Brown, an Army reservist and seasoned state legislator, hardly came out of nowhere.”

“He said Brown did well by not presenting himself as a Washington Republican. Driving around the state in his pickup truck, Brown referred to himself as a “Scott Brown Republican” in what appeared to be an appeal to independents. Instead of dragging out the party brass to support him, Brown enlisted figures like former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and actor John Ratzenberger.

“People don’t want lockstep,” Feehery said. “They want independent thought and somebody who’s going to be an independent check on Obama.””

    Conservative 2010!!! YaHOO”

  12. WELL I’ll be the first one to mention THE BAD NEWS of this WIN:

We in Massachusetts still get stuck with MARTH COAKLEY as Attorney General.

  13. I’ll be sure to post my letter that will be sent tomorrow morning (thanks Hillbuzz) letting both Sen’s Webb and Warner they work for us! And I’ll be cc’ing the rest of the congressional delegation and the new leadership in Virginia. You betcha! I’m fired up! You never want me fired up!!!!

Wanted to bring this up from downstairs. Enjoy! Especially if you like gospel music. Love it! Oh Happy Days…

  14. LisaGinNZ, yes, fight for America and her Constitution, the rest of the world needs us to remain free and strong so they have a place to go to escape tyranny. At least they can dream about it.

  15. Hi, jbjd:

Please let’s at first enjoy the moment in time that this happened. Later on we’ll figure it all out. However, right now, at present, today, is a good time. What I’m trying to also say is that we may not have a next moment in time, even like this.

So although I’m exhausted from anticipation, I am happy. I’m very happy. It’s because of not only Brown winning, but it’s because of what this day means in our history.

So, enjoy! Just enjoy the little time we have before the next time.

  16. Like my sweet niece used to say as a lil’ babe, “Too tool!” (Too cool!)

  17. No reason for us to celebrate yet. This is a positive — however, that health care bill is not yet stopped.

…and Obumma is still in office.

What’s Scott’s stance on the NBC issue?

  18. …………..AND NOW THE LIBERAL SHIP HAS TAKEN ANOTHER TORPEDO, AND IT IS TAKING ON WATER FAST. LISTEN CLOSELY FROM NOW ON AND YOU WILL HEAR SPLASH, AFTER PLASH MADE BY LIBERALS ABANDONING THE SHIP. IT WILL BE SLOW IN THE BEGINNING BUT AS THE SHIP SETTLES LOWER AND LOWER IN THE WATER THEY WILL ABANDON IT EN MASSE. IT IS AN EVENT THAT I PERSONALLY LOOK FORWARD TO WITH RELISH. I WANT TO WATCH THEM GRAB FOR STRAWS AS THEY FIGHT TO STAY AFLOAT. THEY HAVE DONE UNTOLD DAMAGE TO OUR COUNTRY, WHICH WILL TAKE MANY LIFETIMES TO REPAIR, IF IT CAN BE REPAIRED AT ALL.

  19. twe,

The kritters will get special treats tonight to save them from eating the rug.

    I’m still a bit misty….

  20. jbjd…………HI

That is all the time that Scott Brown needs. He is perfectly timed to run for the POTUS in 2012. Based upon his win tonight it is perfectly conceivable that he could win the POTUS with Sarah Palin as VP candidate. He already has more experience than Soetoro. I believe that if he behaves himself as US Senator that he could take a run at the POTUS in 2012, and win. If not 2012 then certainly in 2016, again with Palin as VP candidate, or conversely with Newt Gingrich, or Alan Keyes, as optional VP candidates. These are candidates who are not known to be in the “progressive”camp.

  21. Thank You MA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One down many to go! YES WE CAN! YES WE DID!

Special thank you to SueK, twe, Truthbetold and all in MA who worked hard for this and voted!

    South Caroina Thanks You!!!!

  22. oldsalt and others.

I hate to rain on you parade BUT we are talking about a Massachusetts Republican here which = RINO not what we are looking for in a president.

He won because there is a movement all across this country towards Conservatism and to throw a monkey wrench in Prez Steve’s agenda. Thsi guy is an island crosser. His history in Mass shows that.

  23. “In the end, Brown pulled off the upset in large part because he won unaffiliated voters by a 73% to 25% margin. The senator-elect also picked up 23% of the vote from Democrats. [Our polling shows that 53% of voters in Massachusetts are Democrats, 21% Republican and 26% not affiliated with either party.] ”

From Rasmussen. A truly historic win.

  24. Scott Brown will defend Prez Steve’s eligibility.

  25. Brown is apologizing for being “off script”. He’s kidding right? What a refreshing change from the teleprompter.

God Bless every one of you and goodnight!!! I’m worn out.

  30. jbjd,

Yes I’ve seen that breakdown as well. So I was a bit surprised by Rasmussen’s numbers. The definitions must shift then according to the pollster.

  31. HEY KERRY……….

  32. Can you hear the will of the people now? No more Socialists, No more Unconstitutional bills, No more Voting for moderates in order to gain independate votes through division! Unity has prevailed!

  33. OldSalt77,

Kerry is a good pick next, as well as Boxer, Pelosi, Reed and many others that will not prevail; least in my opinion.

  34. Hi, jbjd:

So best to enjoy the moment in time that this is happening and find positives in it. No one knows what a man or woman is going to do wit their life. But even so, whether they do good or they do bad, then neither one of us may be alive to witness it, right? Do you understand what I’m saying?

Therefore, this is a time of rejoicing for Scott Brown. Like everyone else, he’s a human being and humans are prone to weaknesses. Some can hold up their honor; some can’t hold up their honor, but we don’t know who will or who won’t.

And, jbjd, why not just rejoice and be glad while you and I have the time to do so. We could be blown away tonight by a meteorite. Or anything! If you waste your time to anticipate something that may or may not happen with bad things, then you are wasting your time being sad. Some things that you anticipate could happen, but you have still spent time being sad about them. Whatever happens just will happen.

  37. Sarah Palin writes:

Mr. Brown Goes to Washington… In a Pick-up Truck, No Less!
Congratulations to the new Senator-elect from Massachusetts! Scott Brown’s victory proves that the desire for real solutions transcends notions of “blue state” and “red state”. Americans agree that we need to hold our politicians accountable and bring common sense to D.C.

Recent elections have taught us that when a party in power loses its way, the American people will hold them accountable at the ballot box. Today under the Democrats, government spending is up nearly 23 percent and unemployment is higher than it’s been in a quarter of a century. For the past year they’ve built a record of broken promises, fat cat bailouts, closed-door meetings with lobbyists, sweetheart deals for corporate cronies, and midnight votes on weekends for major legislation that wasn’t even read. The good citizens of Massachusetts reminded Democrats not to take them for granted.

Americans cheered for Scott Brown’s underdog campaign because they viewed his candidacy as a vote against the Democrats’ health care bill. You know that there’s something wrong with this legislation when opposition to it inspired a Republican victory in a state that currently has no Republicans in Congress and last sent a Republican to the Senate nearly 40 years ago.

Clearly this victory is a bellwether for the big election night ten months from now. In the spirit of bipartisanship, let me offer some advice to the Democrats on how to stem this populist tide. Scrap your current health care bill and start from scratch. We all want true reform, but government mandated insurance is not it. Scott Brown campaigned against this top-down bureaucratic mess. We need common sense solutions like reforming malpractice laws, allowing people to purchase insurance across state lines, giving individual purchasers the same tax benefits as those who get coverage through their employers, and letting small businesses pool together to provide insurance for their employees. Focus your efforts on jobs, not on job-killing legislation. Such a change in approach would show Americans that you’re listening.

My best wishes to Senator-Elect Brown. When you go to Washington, may you never forget the ordinary citizens you met while driving that truck through the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

    – Sarah Palin

  38. The beginning of the rejection.
I will pledge my future votes in 2012 to be cast against all democrat incumbents.
I’m not willing at this time to commit my votes to republicans.
I am looking for a party to commit to limited Government and to uphold the Constitution of these United States. I will not settle for lip service.
Just as an added note: Who in their right mind would name their kid Balack Obama? I guess they reject anything associated with right.
    squido

  39. Wait . . . did I just hear Nancy Pelosi’s face fall?

  40. I have high anxiety to listen to Robert Gibbs excuse tonight, or tomorrow as he will blow this off as nothing, nor is it in any way comparable to the Socialist Agenda pertaining to Obama. This should be a joke in of itself within a day or two.

  41. Pelosi’s next on the hit list (in my opinion)! I literally loathe that thing!

  42. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/31693.html

  44. Thank you Scott Brown and the good citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts! If you can do this so can the voters of Illinois. I just sent a note to my Senator Durbin to remind him we will vote in a Republican Senator this Fall to replace Tombstone Burris. And that unless he moderates his radical views, we will turn him out next.

  45. Live Oak…………………………
You are probably correct. This is only the overture. The LIBERALS will hear the rest of the opera beginning tonight on. It is not one composed by Verdi, but by the people of Massachussetts, and the United States. The play has begun.

Sometimes, nothing replaces boots on the ground, so with twe, TBT and Peter in different spots throughout MA, and Greg from NH who works here, I think we covered it well.

And I’ll certainly throw my support behind any candidate anywhere who will do the same thing as Scott did tonight. My checkbook is ready!

A *huge* hat tip to CW, who kept this election coverage alive with the posts, even though there were so many other things going on.

I’m truly grateful for this blog and the wonderful support of all the CWers!

  53. Good news for Scott Brown and citizens of MA tonight. Much better news for Haiti. Seems like everyone is in a tent there, our soldiers, our reporters and the Haitian people. More supplies being distributed, the Hospital Ship has arrived.
The Haitian people that are able are leaving for other parts of the island-family-friends. I don’t know if it was the reporters imagination but they can still feel the earth shaking a little bit. At night when it gets dark and quiet the Haitian people sing. Every contribution-dollars, military, rescue teams are very much appreciated by the people. One report said they will be looking for foster homes for the little ones.

  54. Lt Col Scott strongly derided giving rights to captured combatants and paying for lawyers to defend them rather than weapons to fight them. He will likely join Senator Graham’s effort to curtail funding for criminal trials in NYC. Holder and the Usurper may have to retreat.

  57. William……………………………….
Tonight a large percentage of the people of Massachussetts said that they have had enough of the Kennedys. All of their anger was clearly demonstrated tonight. It is only the first shot in the Revolution which began tonight. The shot will indeed be heard around the world. We now have our work cut out for us. This was only a small battle. We need to win the war. This will happen in 2012, or perhaps earlier if we are rewarded with certain information that is needed to expedite the war, and prosecute the perpetrators for their high crimes against America’s Constitution.

  58. Well just got home from victory party. This is just the beginning. Scott is a voice that will shake up the good old boys club in

Barney Frank Deals Potential Death Blow to Obamacare

    By Philip Klein on 1.19.10 @ 11:39PM

Rep. Barney Frank is not a wobbly moderate in a marginal district, but a liberal Democrat who has been supportive of the health care push. And that’s why this statement below, which essentially rules out all of the options being discussed for pushing through Obamacare, deals a potentially fatal blow to the legislation.

The following was read on MSNBC by Rachel Maddow, and I transcribed it off the screen:

Coackley was a disasterous candidate. The Dems should turn the health care bill over to the Republicans and let them write it. When they won’t it’ll be easier to show they have no agenda. Ramming it through with the Senate bill will be a political disaster and they’ll never get the 60th vote. I said it 6 mos ago to do health care through reconciliation just the way Bush got his tax cut through. People would have forgotten by now. Health care has dragged the president down now for 8 mos, it’s killing him and if jobs don’t get better 2010 will be a disaster as will 2012.”

Meanwhile on the previous Ofa Party Blog thread, a fellow Ofa’er by the name of ‘Donna No Shock Barack No Drama Obama of MD’ came to the rescue of ‘Marbwi’ after finding this person entering sad comment after sad comment and mumbling something with a theme of ‘lessons for Dems—go back to your core roots/principles” continuously for over an hour straight.

‘Donna No Shock Barack No Drama Obama of MD’ broke in and simply said “Marbwi there has been a new thread up for a while: Link”.

I had checked the comment count on the new thread at the time and it over 300. Thank God for ‘Donna No Shock Barack No Drama Obama of MD’.

This is azgo reporting from the ground floor and I mean the ground floor of the Ofa Party Blog where I see a lot of jaws on the floor.

  90. Watch and see. Robert Gibbs has been imitating Baghdad Bob more and more over the months. Tomorrow he may reach his climax and actually morph into Baghdad Bob.

Or maybe his mind will just snap under the load of crap it is carrying and he will become a foaming blithering nutjob, right on TV.

  92. I haven’t had much time to post lately, been busy out of town. I just wanted to take a minute to say congratulations to Scott Brown, to everyone who helped in the effort to elect him, and to America!

  93. Everyone, please, keep in mind, this special election in MA only filled the U.S. Senate seat until 2012.

Trust me; if Scott Brown does not tow the line, we will replace him just as fast as we elected him.

    Geez-wet blanket much?

I think so too…..I was thinking maybe a Brown/Palin ticket in 2012???? They were even talking about having him give the rebuttal to the FRAUD’S state of the union speech…..I think it would be fantastic……Brown is very bold and not afraid of the FRAUD…..in other words he doesn’t hold him up as some esteem politician…..Brown could debate the FRAUD and make him squirm….just like he did CROAKley!!!!

  104. @Jacqlyn Smith:

I don’t know, I hate to rush things like that, amd I kinda want Mass. to enjoy its new, competent senator. But, clearly, Brown has that X factor. He is personable without the use of a ‘teleprompter”, he showed that he is willing to let his guard down, because he is a real person, not some manufactured image. This is very refreshing. This man will have an interesting future, and his family is just lovely.

Bayh Warns “Catastrophe” If Dems Ignore Massachusetts Senate Race Lessons

    January 19, 2010 6:14 PM

Abc_Jonathan_Karl_081203_mn ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reports:

Even before the votes are counted, Senator Evan Bayh is warning fellow Democrats that ignoring the lessons of the Massachusetts Senate race will “lead to even further catastrophe” for their party.

“There’s going to be a tendency on the part of our people to be in denial about all this,” Bayh told ABC News, but “if you lose Massachusetts and that’s not a wake-up call, there’s no hope of waking up.”

  132. Two on Two Challenge:

Last night Scott challenged the Usurper to bring his best player to take on Scott and his daughter Ayla in a game of two on two at the White House basketball court. This was one of the most remarkable challenges of modern political times; it reflects a clear lack of fear and demand for respect. Scott publicly ‘dissed’ the Usurper in a manner many have missed. He said he and his daughter! could prevail over the Usurper and his best man. Wonderful! [ Now it is true that Ayla may be the only among them who played NCAA ball]

”In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them.”
