Hurricane Irene projected path Friday August 26, 2011, Category 3, NC coast, Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford,  Boston

***  UPDATE BELOW  ***

From the Weather Channel August 26, 2011.

“Hurricane Irene, a large, powerful Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, continues to plow through the northwest Bahamas, with the U.S. in its sights.

As you can see on our projected path map below, Hurricane Irene will be a very dangerous hurricane as it tracks along the East Coast this weekend. Anyone in the corridor from eastern North Carolina to the Northeast U.S. should be preparing for a hurricane!”

  • We’ve added an “EXTREME” threat level category from eastern North Carolina to southern New England. According to Hurricane Expert, Dr. Rick Knabb and Sr. Meteorologist, Stu Ostro, “this is a particularly threatening situation and it’s best for people to be on alert.
  • Computer models are currently trending toward a forecast solution of rare potency for portions of the Northeast.
  • Irene will be a serious and multi-hazard threat for the major metropolitan areas of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. This includes Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Boston. This hurricane has the potential to produce flooding rains, high winds, downed trees (on houses, cars, power lines) and widespread power outages. Significant impacts along the immediate coast include high waves, surge and beach erosion.
  • For North Carolina, the main impacts of damaging winds and storm surge flooding will be confined to the far eastern portions of the state. In addition to the Outer Banks, this potentially includes Morehead City and Atlantic Beach.
  • Timing: Irene will make its closest approach to North Carolina late Friday night through Saturday. Northeast U.S. impacts would be Saturday night through early Monday.

We remain a couple of days away from Irene’s direct impacts along the US East Coast and critical uncertainties related to Irene’s exact track and intensity remain. Stay tuned to The Weather Channel and right here on weather.com for further updates.

    *** Attention ***
If you live in Eastern NC or any other low lying area in the path of Irene, I strongly urge you to make plans to evacuate. The storm surge from the ocean and sounds could be larger than anything we have witnessed in our lifetimes & the inland flooding will be catastrophic.

  2. Good Morning CW. I wouldn’t be surprise if the Washington Monument fell over out of protest of Obama’s distruction of America.

    Stay safe friend. Zach

    Good morning Zach, et al.
There were at least 3 earthquakes in VA yesterday.
I am fearful that too many people will not take Irene seriously enough.
I have not witnessed this setup in my lifetime.

  4. CW,
I survived 4 Hurricanes in 2004. I didn’t evacuate for the last one for business reasons. Trust me to inform all of your readers NOT TO STAY IN FLOODING ZONES and get away from landfall of hurricanes. I have seen 39 inches of rain fall in 49 hours, microbursts, and mini-tornadoes. I saw giant holes ripped into one of the most study building in the world (NASA vehicle assembly building). To our fellow posters and readers, GO INLAND.

  6. Today, Obama is considering taking over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. I reposted this from another poster on Fox news so everyone can get up to speed on the 2008 economic downturn.

1977: Jimmy Carter (D) signs the Community Reinvestment Act, guaranteeing home loans to low-income families

1999: Bill Clinton (D) puts the CRA on steroids, pushing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to increase the number of sub-prime loans.

2003: The White House calls Fannie and Freddie “a systemic risk.” The Bush administration pushes Congress to enact new regulations. Bush warned them 17 TIMES.

2003: Barney Frank (D-CN) says F&F are “not in a crisis.” He bashes Republicans for crying wolf and calls F&F “financially sound.” Democrats block the Republican-sponsored regulation legislation.

2005: Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan voices a warning over F&F accounting. “We are placing the total financial system of the future at a substantial risk.”

2005: Sen. Charles Schumer, (D-NY) says “…I think Fannie and Freddie over the years have done an incredibly good job and are an intrinsic part of making America the best-housed people in the world …if you look over the last 20 or whatever years, they’ve done a very, very good job.”

2006: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) again calls for reform. “For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac … and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the marketplace … the GSE’s (government sponsored enterprises) need to be reformed without delay.”

2006: Democrats again block reform legislation.

2008: housing market collapses; Democrats blame the Republicans

    Take home message.
The dems don’t care if it burns, as long as they get rich in the process and can blame someone else.

AP-GfK Poll: Most Republicans happy with GOP field

WASHINGTON (AP) — After grousing for months, Republicans are growing more satisfied with their choices for president and, so far, they like what they’re hearing from the newest candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

An Associated Press-GfK poll released Friday found that two-thirds of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents are pleased with the party’s presidential field, compared with just half in June. And they’re paying more attention, with 52 percent expressing a “great deal” of interest in the GOP nomination fight — compared with 39 percent earlier this summer — after a period that saw Perry enter the race and Michele Bachmann win a test vote in Iowa, the lead-off caucus state, threatening Mitt Romney’s standing at the top of the pack.

  12. http://news.yahoo.com/rick-perry-labels-washington-seedy-place-023212069.html

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry on Thursday described Washington as “a seedy place” while defending what he said was his manner of speaking plainly.

Since launching his campaign on August 13, the Texas governor has made some statements that drew criticism from the White House and some Republican opinion leaders.

“With all due respect to anybody that’s out there either directly or indirectly criticizing me because I speak plainly, I call it like I see it,” Perry said on the Laura Ingraham radio show.

“Look, I am not an establishment figure — never have been and frankly I don’t want to be. I dislike Washington. I think it’s a seedy place,” he said

The public statements that raised eyebrows in Washington did not dent support for Perry among Republican voters, according to polls released this week.

Perry, known for his strongly conservative social and fiscal political views, has taken a double-digit lead over the early favorite, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

Just days after entering the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, Perry caused a stir when he seemed to threaten Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke over federal spending.

“If this guy prints more money between now and the election, I don’t know what y’all would do to him in Iowa but we — we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas,” Perry said to laughter from supporters at a campaign stop in Iowa.

Perry did not back away from his comments. His campaign said the Texas governor was expressing his frustration with the U.S. economic situation and the “out of control spending” in Washington.

Mitt Romney vs. Rick Perry — this primary season is going to be class warfare at its most entertaining.

It’s barely even started, and already you hear callers to Rush Limbaugh saying, “Rick Perry dittos.” And the dying broadsheets are already ramping up to defend Romneycare, trying their damnedest not to trip over anybody in Massachusetts who’s had to pay a $2,000 fine for the crime of having no dough.

And it’s not even Labor Day yet

So let us consider the profound, irreconcilable differences between these two men.

Rick Perry goes to rodeos, Mitt Romney goes to Rodeo Drive.

Rick Perry is cowboy boots, Mitt Romney is flip-flops. Rick Perry is Full Metal Jacket, Mitt is full dinner jacket

Rick Perry is a handgun, Mitt Romney is a staple gun. Gov. Perry is packing heat, Gov. Romney is taking heat.

Rick Perry — former Democrat. Mitt Romney — former Republican.

Mitt Romney looks like the guy who fired you. Rick Perry looks like the guy who kicked your butt outside the roadhouse Friday night. It’s Merle Haggard vs. the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Rick Perry is Bible Belt. Mitt Romney is Gucci belt. Rick Perry — Air Force jet. Mitt Romney — corporate jet

  15. http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/article/hurricane-irene-major-northeast-threats_2011-08-23

Hurricane Irene is likely to be the most impactful hurricane to hit the East Coast in at least several decades! The latest computer model guidance confirms this extraordinary threat…

It all starts with Hurricane Irene’s incredible wind field. As of Thursday evening, tropical storm-force winds were up to 430 miles wide!

Hurricane Irene’s tropical storm-force wind field is larger than both Hurricane Ike (2008) and Hurricane Katrina (2005) at maximum size!

Before the 2010 hurricane season, TWC Hurricane Expert, Dr. Rick Knabb (Follow on Twitter | Become a Facebook fan) published a list of the 5 most hurricane vulnerable and overdue cities.

Among those cities: New York City and Atlantic City

According to Knabb, many parts of the Northeast are very vulnerable to storm surge, including New York Harbor and Buzzard’s Bay.

Hurricane Irene’s center is now expected to track close or even a little inland of the Jersey Shore into southern New England, that places New York City and southern New England on the eastern semicircle of the circulation, meaning significant storm surge flooding is expected in these vulnerable locations! Coastal flooding would also begin well ahead of the arrival of the center of Irene from North Carolina to New England.

The danger with Hurricane Irene is that it could still be at least a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale at least into the Mid-Atlantic States, and the size of the wind field means widespread impacts, as you’ve seen above, for tens of millions!

So, are you truly “hurricane ready?”

  16. citizenwells

    Jonah.
    Yes.
Raleigh will probably be hit with strong winds.
There could be power outages there.

  17. Free Republic blog has been down since last night (8/25). Anyone know why?

  18. http://www.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/2011-hurricane-overdue-cities_2011-05-27?page=4

New York City is a hurricane-vulnerable, coastal metropolis. You don’t believe me? Yes, it’s a rare occurrence, but hurricanes have struck there before.

The 1821 event caused some storm surge flooding in portions of lower Manhattan, but those neighborhoods are far more built up and populated today. And a major hurricane on a track farther west than in 1938 could push more than 30 feet of storm surge into New York City. Knowing all of this history, the New York City Office of Emergency Management has planned for the next hurricane.

  19. There are 8 Hurricanes predicted for the Atlantic Seaboard this year. Irene is just the first. If a Hurricane like Katrina hits NYC it is lights out. Anyone who visited the Gulf Coast after Katrina is well aware of the destruction caused, not in New Orleans which was west of the eye but to Biloxi, Slidell and Gulfport. If a storm like that hits NYC, I can only imagine the death and destruction that it will cause.

  20. As 9/11 approaches, I’m asking EVERYONE to post a good 9/11
documentary on their Facebook page. Loose Change, Terrorstorm,
& Endgame are all good choices.

But Craig Ranke’s expose on the Pentagon is a slam dunk, and proves
that a 757 never hit the side of the building. A cab driver caught in a huge lie by photographs actually admits it was all a set up. Look it up on Youtube under Craig Ranke.

  23. I am ~ 25 miles north of Boston, and the Atlantic coast is ~ 30 miles to my east.

We are preparing as best we can. The center of Irene is projected to make landfall in southern CT then, cut across MA. My area will be on the ‘dirty’ side of the storm, which contains the highest winds. She is projected to come in as a weak Category 1 or a strong tropical storm; no matter which it is, there will be damage along the eastern seaboard and into New England.

Please say a prayer for everyone who will be affected by this storm.

I will never forget seeing the Grand Casino sitting in the middle of the Coast Highway 90 and the Presidents Casino was blown clear across the Highway.

  32. Sue,
Prayers are on the way for Ct. and Mass. . We are located ten miles from the ocean in Md and expect heavy rain and severe winds. We are as prepared as we can be. We know our street and yard will be flooded but are hoping it doesn’t come into the house. We don’t have any trees on our property so that is one fear we don’t have to worry about anyway. Stay safe.

In less than 24 hours, this all will be out of our hands and in Someone else’s.

Right now, our focus should be on the Carolinas and mid-Altantic states. We have a declared state of emergency in MA and I’m sure that all Governors of any affected states will be doing the same shortly.

    Will post as I can.

CW, please be safe down there.

  40. For SueK, CW and all of the others in harm’s way, remember this, which I heard recently: We should not fear tomorrow, because God is already there.

  41. Thank you for doing these updates!!! It helps (mentally) to keep an eye, on the latest projected path. After doing necessary preparations, of course.

    Thank you!

  42. And my Thank You, to all wishing us well…

  43. My prayers and well-wishing to all of you. Most will be fine, but this is a storm maliciously being sent your way. Do not let anything defeat you now. Baltimore though, be particularly careful.

Thank you Bob and Free Speech,

I’m Proe Graphique, the creator of ObamaFake.

We’ve actually started an official, free and non-committal (for you) recruitment drive to get more activists aboard to join with us individually and collectively to get the word out to the country about the Birth Certificate Fake. It isn’t as nutty and pie-in-the-sky as it sounds, we’re relentlessly practical but have some inventive thinkers also, and we have modified a few strategies based on non-political activities spun slightly to get the word out about the birth certificate fake and these strategies can and do make your voice speak as many thousands, and that’s no exaggeration; in a couple of instances, there are established projection models of similar activities that absolutely prove it.

Everyone at ObamaFake is getting pretty close and having a really good time with it, now, because, A. it’s just fun and B. it’s satisfying as can be to see immediate results and understand the gigantic long-term effects between now and 2012 for what you are doing at this very minute.

Won’t you swing around, take a good look and add your voice and enjoy the festivities? I’m serious about that festivities part – it’s developing into a little bit of a party atmosphere as of late. ObamaFake is entirely non-commercial; no money is made in any way whatsoever in any form. We’re just (hopefully) patriots online every night getting the job done. You don’t have to officially join up or add an e-mail and you can use any handle you want for your posts – zero personal information about you is available or collected, unless you volunteer it on the board, and even then depending on the info I may not allow it to go through just in case. We’re just winning this battle, and we just want more friends to join to win. The more people having fun at ObamaFake now, the sooner we can put this constitutional nightmare to rest, because public awareness is the key; Politically speaking, ensure enough public awareness on a scandal, and everything else takes care of itself.
