“Prophecy Has Catholics and Protestants Watching Pope Benedict in April”
“As April 16th looms, speculation is mounting concerning the possible post-birthday retirement of Pope Benedict XVI. These speculations are fueled by statements last year from Italian media personality journalist and Vatican insider, Antonio Socci, who wrote in The Times of London, “In short: the Pope does not discard the possibility of resigning when he reaches 85 in April next year.”[i]
Benedict was 78 when appointed pope in April of 2005 and was quoted then as having preferred a peaceful retirement, “At a certain point, I prayed to God ‘please don’t do this to me’…Evidently, this time He didn’t listen to me.”[ii] Even more, in his book, Pope Benedict XVI Light of the World, when asked if he thought it appropriate for a pope to retire he responded, “If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right and, under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign.”[iii] This widely reported predisposition adds credence to recent rumors.
While official sources assert his recent trip to Cuba as evidence of his ongoing vitality, a December 2011 Associated Press story from Vatican City asserted, “Pope Benedict XVI seems worn out.”
The internet and Bible prophecy community have been buzzing due to an ancient prophecy attributed to Saint Malachy which predicted some 112 popes culminating in the destruction of Rome, Benedict being next to last. Adding fuel to the fire are assertions from a soon to be released book titled after the predicted last pope concerning a cryptic cipher published by a Belgian Jesuit back in 1951.
Bestselling author, Thomas Horn (Apollyon Rising, Forbidden Gates), has teamed up with a Christian apologist and author Cris Putnam (Pandemonium’s Engine) in the soon to be released book, Petrus Romanus, which explores the intricacies of the Malachy prophecy and the potential role of the pope in biblical prophecy. According to the blog promoting the soon to be released book, the deceased Jesuit priest and codebreaker, René Thibaut, decoded 2012 explicitly as the year for the final conclave. According to calculations at Putnam’s website the date coincides with the recent rumors.
While some Catholic scholars are divided on the Prophecy of the Popes, John Lupia Ph.D. at Roman Catholic News has deemed it genuine. Loyal Catholics are likely incredulous due to Rome’s predicted doom during the next pontificate. This foretold apocalyptic demise has Protestants like Hal Lindsey and Jack Van Impe speculating that the “rapture” of the church — a time when true believers will be caught away into the heavens and saved from great tribulation — will occur very soon. For believers in the rapture, this seems all the more exhilarating amidst the numerous 2012 predictions.
Other Protestants see a remarkable potential that the predicted final pope may personify the false prophet predicted in the Book of Revelation in chapter 13 verses 11 onward. That end-time figure is said to appear as a lamb, a Christian, yet speak like a dragon pointing to the same book’s symbol for Satan. Prophetic commentators have been quick to point out recent Vatican statements calling for an increased role for the United Nations and a world financial authority. While many Catholic faithful are incensed by the insinuation that the next pontiff is the predicted second beast, it is not without precedent. In addition to respected Catholic seers down through time who predicted Rome would become the seat of the Antichrist, Pope Benedict himself, while still a Cardinal, shocked the Catholic community when he confessed that he did not think the Holy Spirit was necessarily involved in the conclave that elects popes. When asked on Bavarian television in 1997 if the Holy Spirit is responsible for who gets elected pope, Cardinal Ratzinger responded, “I would not say so, in the sense that the Holy Spirit picks out the pope. … There are too many contrary instances of popes the Holy Spirit would obviously not have picked.”[iv]
Cardinal Ratzinger’s startling admission seems at odds with the traditional dogma of papal succession all the way back to Jesus’ disciple Peter and inadvertently lends credence to the election of a false prophet.
The Vatican has done little to silence the building buzz concerning the next pope and Malachy prophecy. Ratzinger also created a stir when he chose the name “Benedict” seeming to intentionally fulfill the Malachy prophecy’s characterization of him as the “glory of the Olive” (the Benedictine order is symbolized by an Olive branch). With the recent rumors concerning the pope’s soon retirement, this begs the question of whether the Vatican is intentionally fulfilling the Malachy predictions and setting the stage for the coming of Petrus Romanus.”

I doubt if he will retire since at the beginning of his pontificate he prayed that he would not run from the surmounting evil against the Church. He also sees himself as the pope of these end times of good vs evil. He also had as his mentor Blessed John Paul II who stayed the course even with his debilitating illness. But….I do imagine him as being the pope of prophecy who will be forced to flee Rome and go into hiding where he will die a pretty horrible death. The Church will be forced underground as the daily sacrifice will be forbidden. There will be a true pope elected in that underground atmosphere while the apostatized church, in league with the Antichrist, will claim an anti-pope as their “true” one who will be a prophet for the Antichrist. Meanwhile the remnant believers will be persecuted until satan’s time is up and the new era of those “thousand” years is established until the final judgment occurs. The last pope of these end times but not end of world is supposedly “Peter the Roman” who will lead the remnant during the times of persecution.

He will rule supreme in temporal matters. The Pope will rule supreme in spiritual matters at the same time. Persecution [against the Catholic Church] will cease and justice shall reign. He will root out false doctrines. His dominion will extend from East to West. All nations will adore God their Lord according to Catholic teaching. People will love justice, and peace will reign over the whole earth, for Divine Power will bind Satan for many years until the coming of the Son of Perdition.

I am a Catholic but I have NO respect for the current Pope. Before he was Pope, I read an article in which he said that the priest sex abuse scandal in the US was “overblown”. There are still current cases of priest abuses so all the talk about him being upset over them is crocodile tears.
I feel my faith and the Church are 2 different things. It’s a shame that this beautiful faith has been so corrupted.

Sorry, but I cannot agree with your “facts”. This pope has been not only outspoken from the time he was presented with the sorry complete reports, describing it as filth and some other all consuming descriptions, stating even that the True Church/believers is being reduced but will come out as more purified in the end….has arranged and met with more groups of abused and listening and calling out the abusers, condemning their actions and suffering the huge ramifications upon the Church as a whole, personally. I Do think he was accurate about the focus SOLELY upon the Catholic Church when the culture for the abuse continues throughout the world. In the past I worked with foster care and I can report that coverup, esp. in the entire education system continues to this day and is beyond anything ever reported. It’s HUGE! And I know that the court system itself did the very same with abusers…sent them for “therapy”, listened to the psychologists/psychiatrists, and then released them back into the public. Just check your own neighborhood sometime for abusers living there. There are maps!! What a bunch of hypocrits when it comes to any type of true concern for the ongoing abuse EVERYWHERE!
This Pope is an extremely holy man; sacrificial and will likely be martyred in the end. I find his approach to be one that does not fall captive to the lying culture of journalistic shake down artists.

“Crocodile tears” is serious slander of the Pope. How do you know that he didn’t confess through the sacrament of penance to his ignorance of the situation? Was it so egregious at the time he made the comments to assume that Catholic haters would exaggerate the depth of any problem the Church faces? His words AND actions tell a different story than you portray. Do you understand the enormity of his vocation?

The Catholic Church lost its way a long time ago when it began to worship the pope like Jesus. What is amazing to me is that the Bible says not to worship idols (it is very plain), but yet the Catholics treat the pope like he is God. It is quite disturbing and the real reason why the Catholic Church will fall. It has not lived by the laws of God. It has skewed God’s laws for its own purpose. The Roman Church State is an antichrist, and so is the U.S. military, and they will both fall by the hand of God.
Pamela Cox, you are very wise. The Catholic church has strayed so far from God that I don’t even consider the fact, that they may ever find their way back. US corporations that run the US government that govern the US military to execute needless war, for stealing territory, riches, and the love of power, at the expense of the lives of precious souls that God created to be here on earth are evil. These large “organizations” are Godless which makes them self serving, greedy, violent, and power hungry. The evil doers are alive and well on this earth, but they will be their own undoing. God will let them destroy themselves, as it should be. May God have mercy on the countless numbers of human souls that have been lost by going down the path of darkness, including the foolish that are brainwashed by the lies and propaganda.
