Not only are NY City’s subways flooded, damaged and experiencing power outages, but sources say that the salt water could have a devastating effect on electrical wiring.

“MTA chairman Joseph J. Lhota has released a statement about the recovery of service for transportation systems in New York City.

It doesn’t look good.

Seven subway tunnels under the East River flooded, the Metro-North has lost power at stretches on multiple lines and there’s plenty more damage throughout the entire system.

Here’s the statement from Lhota — from Anthony DeRosa at Reuters:

The New York City subway system is 108 years old, but it has never faced a disaster as devastating as what we experienced last night. Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on our entire transportation system, in every borough and county of the region. It has brought down trees, ripped out power and inundated tunnels, rail yards and bus depots.

As of last night, seven subway tunnels under the East River flooded. Metro-North Railroad lost power from 59th Street to Croton-Harmon on the Hudson Line and to New Haven on the New Haven Line. The Long Island Rail Road evacuated its West Side Yards and suffered flooding in one East River tunnel. The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel is flooded from end to end and the Queens Midtown Tunnel also took on water and was closed. Six bus garages were disabled by high water.

We are assessing the extent of the damage and beginning the process of recovery. Our employees have shown remarkable dedication over the past few days, and I thank them on behalf of every New Yorker. In 108 years, our employees have never faced a challenge like the one that confronts us now.

All of us at the MTA are committed to restoring the system as quickly as we can to help bring New York back to normal.”

    Of course, in the circles that I ran with, it will be forever labeled “The Dumbest Shit I Ever Heard Doctrine”….

    A number of years back I remember reading that the main electrical bus in the tunnels under the East river and elsewhere in the subway system were going to be replaced with a buss made of copper-nickel alloy which is resistant to corrosion from salt water. If they actually done this then it is conceiveable that only the lighting wiring might have been damaged by the flooding. Probably all motorman’s signals along the right of way may need repair though. When I lived in Brooklyn there was an employee of the New York Port Authority who lived in our building. He used to tell us a lot about what went on with the subways. He had something to do with the maintenance,but I cannot remember exactly what it was. I was thinking that he worked in the car shops for awhile. In Brooklyn during the summer when everybody has their apartment windows open all you could hear was the air release of the brakes,and the moan of the drive gears of the trains, as they accelerated. All night long it was PSSSSSHHHHHHH, followed closely by UUUUUMMMMMMMMMMM. Some people in Brooklyn used to say that they can’t sleep when they can’t hear the subway trains stop and start.

    This week it’s Sandy that’s getting all the attention, although Benghazzi is still very much in play, but now, all but forgotten..

    Next week, it will be the elections and everything else will be in the trash cans of history..

    ”One of Stevens’ main missions in Libya was to facilitate the transfer of much of Gadhafi’s military equipment, including the deadly SA-7 — portable SAMs — to Islamists and other al-QAEDA-affiliated groups fighting the Assad Regime in Syria.”

    Barack Obama has long had a cozy relationship with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and their alliance with Islamists in Syria battling Bashir Assad has been criticized before.

    If Ambassador Stevens was facilitating weapons transfers from Libya to Syrian Islamist forces aligned with al-Qaeda, via his Turkish alliance, then we are at a troubling, perhaps catastrophic point in this republic’s history.

    18 USC § 2381 provides us with a legal threshold for treason:

    Providing munitions to al-QAEDA-aligned Islamist forces would meet the standar of 18 USC, ss2381..
    The Obama administration has this most damaging charge of all to which it must answer, and can be offered no quarter.

    If it is proven that part of Ambassador Stevens job was to transfer weapons to al-Qaeda on the orders of Obama….that indeed is treason as outlined in USC 18 section 2381…there is no other explaination for providing armis and munitions to an enemy whom our armed forces are currently engaging in mortal combat on the field of battle.

    We can’t cherry pick what al-Qaeda groups we will fight, and what al-Queda groups we will support. The enemy in the same regardless of what country they are in. the black flag is the same, regardless of who is carrying it.

    THE TRUTH MUST COME OUT ON THIS BEFORE OTHER AMERICANS ARE PLACED ON THE ALTER, OR ASK TO FALL ON OBAMA’S SWORD.

    The author of the article you cited @ 1:27, Clare Lopez, I heard interviewed recently on Trunews. And on last nights audio of Trunews, Rick Wiles said that Gen. Ham had been fired from his position for threatening to defy orders to “stand down”. I believe he was referring to a Washington Times article.

    Anyway, I am personally very interested in the plight of Sean Smith. My son-in-law knew him through an online game he played daily. They are both computer techs. On Sept. 10, he (Sean) wrote that there were men taking pictures of the compound and he thought it was strange. Then on Sept. 11, he wrote “Oh F**K! GUNFIRE!” That was the last he was heard from. You can imagine how my son-in-law took this.

    All of the family and friends of the ambassador and the other 3 have every right to know exactly what happened! Every US citizen has a right to know what happened! WHO gave the order to stand down??????????

    Good article but does anyone really believe that this case has even the slightest chance of getting anywhere in the U.S. justice system?

    For one thing the Spire Law Group, LLP, is targeting an extremely large number of defendants – high government officials as well as the largest banks in the country. The amount is staggering – 43 TRILLION, and the claimants are in the form of a class action.

    All sorts of suits can be brought, but that does not have one iota of meaning that they will succeed. This suit involves too many people in high government offices, including the DOJ. I’m not wasting my time in following this one. The court may let this case proceed, but it will get nipped in the bud at some point, because it is too broad. Just mho.

    Greta did have quite a long segment on Benghazi tonight. She had Senator Graham and John Bolton. The questions were very specific about the security, the timing and the rumors about the gun sales. I know that I have issues with her stance on some things but she was good tonight. We must get answers.

    We were very fortunate during the storm. We are blessed to know that all of our family and friends from Virginia to Long Island weathered the hurricane safely. Thank you for your prayers.

    Great to hear from you and that you all survived Sandy! I listened to most of the two-hour special by Greta and was most intrigued by Bing West, who was Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs in the Reagan administration.

    He put it in very simple terms as far as the statement which Obama has made to the effect that he allegedly told the military to do whatever was necessary. West said that whatever directive – regardless of how informally put – would have been written into an order as from the President. That order would be in writing and it could be made available if requested.

    Now here comes Panetta saying just a few days ago that he and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dempsey, and General Ham all agreed that no action could be taken because they didn’t know what they were getting into (put into my words).

    If the President is telling the truth, then Panetta as SOD is in direct violation of a presidential command. Weird!! West said that Clinton as SOS would not be under the chain of military command.

    Any bets as to who is lying? We already know from previous experience that we have the Liar-in-Chief right there in the W.H.

    I can’t help wondering if the attack on the Benghazzi Consulate was actually carried out by Israeli agents, who knew that the left over Gadaffi military weaponry was being transferred to the Islamist radicals,and would ultimately be used against Israel as well. This could have been planned for some time, and it would look like jihadist terrorists were responsible. The weaponry used in the attack which allegedly included mortars, were used with a great deal of accuracy. This reflects a lot of training. Israel would have had a lot to gain from such an attack. They have been known to do such attacks,and even kill US citizens in the process. Particularly if they believed that the Gadaffi weapons were being transferred to Islamists via the ambassador. Israeli Commandos would have had orders to kill all at the consulate.

    OldSailor, I’m not RMinNC, but couldn’t help but read your post as always!
    Anything is certainly possible, that’s for sure, in this mixed up world. If your scenario were true, then that would be highly classified information it seems.

    I know one thing. We Americans and Soetoro have entirely different world views. We think of America as being the greatest country in the world because of our stand for freedom and our military might to protect that freedom. We have liberated many nations in the past who otherwise would today be speaking German or Japanese. We consider our nation as being a beacon for all freedom-loving people, some of whom nearly die to reach our shores.

    Soetoro, on the other hand, has much the opposite view of America. He considers us as arrogant, dictatorial, and militarily aggressive. Therefore, naturally he “governs” the way he believes, and his beliefs have gotten us into a peck of trouble. It is hard telling how much damage he has done that has not yet come to light. We are going to pay a dear price, I believe, for the mischief he has accomplished.

    As Pat Caddell noted, those same media lapdogs have muzzled themselves in an unprecedented manner in this matter, but our Canadian friends at least have some semblance of honor left, writing:

But that Barack did so without any compelling reason—except political—is beyond evil. Only a moral monster would have made that decision when it was within his powers to possibly save them with almost no effort of his own.

    But is there more than that? Is the treason yet greater? Were Obama and others covering up more than their ineptitude? Just what was Ambassador Stevens doing in Benghazi that day? Why had he left the Libyan capital to meet with the Turkish ambassador on the anniversary of September 11?

    Rumors abound. According to Admiral Lyons writing in the Washington Times,

    …one of Stevens’ main missions in Libya was to facilitate the transfer of much of Gadhafi’s military equipment, including the deadly SA-7 – portable SAMs – to Islamists and other al Qaeda-affiliated groups fighting the Assad Regime in Syria. In an excellent article, Aaron Klein states that Stevens routinely used our Benghazi consulate (mission) to coordinate the Turkish, Saudi Arabian and Qatari governments’ support for insurgencies throughout the Middle East. Further, according to Egyptian security sources, Stevens played a “central role in recruiting Islamic jihadists to fight the Assad Regime in Syria.”

    I believe that Benedict Arnold was more along the lines of a spy that did not owe allegiance to America. However it doesn’t really matter. obama is still a traitor and should recieve the appropriate punishment.
