IL senate race debate, Alexi Giannoulias, Mark Kirk, Giannoulias Rezko Obama

Obama is back in Chicago and Illinois stumping again for another corruption crony, Alexi Giannoulias. Obama supporting any candidate should be a politcal kiss of death. However, Alexi Giannoulias, has enough baggage of his own, enough associations with criminals like Tony Rezko and Michael Durango, to alarm concerned citizens.

From the recent debate between Alexi Giannoulias and Mark Kirk provided by the Chicago Tribune.

“>> Phil Ponce: LET’S MOVE ON TO SOMETHING ELSE THAT CONTINUES TO LINGER. MR. GIANNOULIAS, YOU ACKNOWLEDGED THAT YOU KNEW THE CRIMINAL BACKGROUNDS TO MEN TO

WHO YOUR FAMILY’S BANK MADE LOANS UP TO $27 MILLION, WHAT EXACTLY DID YOU KNOW ABOUT MICHAEL DURANGO AND OTHERS?

>> Alexi Giannoulias: LET ME STEP BACK AND TRY TO CLEAR THE AIR BECAUSE THROUGHOUT THIS CAMPAIGN, CONGRESSMAN KIRK AND KARL ROVE AND HIS OUTSIDE GROUPS HAVE

SAID THINGS THAT ARE WRONG, INACCURATE AND OFFENSIVE.
I’M VERY, VERY PROUD OF THE BUSINESS THAT MY FATHER STARTED 30 YEARS AGO.
AND, YOU KNOW, NO ONE    NO ONE HAS EVER ACCUSED MY FATHER’S BUSINESS OF EVER DOING ANYTHING ILLEGAL, ELICIT OR IMPROPER.
HE CAME TO THIS COUNTRY WITH NOTHING.
HE STARTED A COMMUNITY BANK THAT HELPED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ACHIEVED THE AMERICAN DREAM.
BY

>> Phil Ponce: LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR CONDUCT, THOUGH.

>> Alexi Giannoulias: BY HELPING THEM BUY THEIR FIRST HOME.
TO CHERRY PICK A FEW INDIVIDUALS OUT OF THOUSANDS    OUT OF THOUSANDS WHILE IT’S EASY TO MAKE A POLITICAL AD, RUNNING A BUSINESS IS NOT A STRAIGHT LINE.
AND MISTAKES ARE MADE, AND INEVITABLY, UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE PEOPLE YOU WISH YOU NEVER HAD DONE BUSINESS WITH, BUT THAT DOESN’T REPRESENT THE THOUSANDS OF

CUSTOMERS THAT ACHIEVE THE AMERICAN DREAM BECAUSE OF MY FATHER.

>> Phil Ponce: AND YET YOU SAID IN A 2006 ARTICLE, THAT YOU DID DISCUSS HIS CRIMINAL BACKGROUND WITH MR. DURANGO.

>> Alexi Giannoulias: NOTHING I SAID IS INCONSISTENT.
THESE ARE NOT THE KIND OF PEOPLE THAT WE WANT TO DO BUSINESS WITH, THAT’S NOT MY FATHER’S LEGACY.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE WAY THAT BANKS AND COMMUNITY BANKS MAKE DECISIONS.
THEY LOOK AT THE CREDIT WORTHINESS AND WHETHER THAT INDIVIDUAL CAN PAY THEIR LOAN IN A TIMELY MANNER.
THAT’S HOW CREDIT DECISIONS ARE MADE.
IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT THAT NONE OF THE LOANS THAT WERE GIVEN HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY OF THESE INDIVIDUALS.
NONE OF THEM.
SO, AGAIN, IT’S IMPORTANT TO PUT THAT IN PERSPECTIVE AND I’M VERY PROUD OF MY FATHER’S COMMUNITY BANK.

>> Phil Ponce: WE ARE REALLY TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, HOW YOU PERFORMED AS A SENIOR LOAN OFFICER.
AND DID YOU KNOW, FOR EXAMPLE, THE TWO MEN WERE FACING PRISON SENTENCES AT THE TIME THE LOANS WERE MADE?

>> Alexi Giannoulias: AS I SAID, PHIL, IF WE KNEW THEN WHAT WE KNOW NOW, WE WOULDN’T DO BUSINESS.
>> Phil Ponce: SO YOU DON’T KNOW?

>> Alexi Giannoulias: PHIL, WHEN MAKE A CREDIT DECISION.
YOU LOOK AT THE CREDIT WORTHINESS OF THE BORROWER AND WHETHER OR NOT THEY CAN PAY THAT LOAN.
AND WHEN YOU GO TO A LARGER BANK, YOU WILL FIND NOT TWO OR THREE PEOPLE BUT HUNDREDS.
THAT’S HOW THE REALITY OF BUSINESSES.

>> Phil Ponce: ARE YOU SAYING YOU GO TO A LARGER BANK LIKE CHASE, THEY DO BUSINESS WITH HUNDREDS OF CRIMINALS.

>> Alexi Giannoulias: ABSOLUTELY.
I’M SURE THEY HAVE GOTTEN LOANS FROM A LOT OF OTHER BANKS.

>> Phil Ponce: DO YOU HAVE YOUR LIST WITH YOU?

>> Mark Kirk: THIS IS A LIST OF ALL THE LOANS MADE BY BROADWAY BANK.
THE ONES IN YELLOW ARE THE ONES MADE WHEN ALEXI GIANNOULIAS WAS THE SENIOR LOAN OFFICER OF THE BROADWAY BANK.
TO INFAMOUS MOBSTERS LIKE MICHAEL “JAWS” DURANGO AND TO LEARN ABOUT THEM, YOU DON’T HAVE TO PULL THEIR RAP SHEET.
YOU CAN READ ABOUT THEM IN THE “CHICAGO TRIBUNE.”
JOE KLEIN OF “TIME” MAGAZINE SAID AFTER OUR APPEARANCE ON “MEET THE PRESS” IN ALL OF HIS YEARS IN POLITICS, HE DIDN’T SEE SOMEONE RUNNING FOR A NATIONALLY

POLITICAL OFFICE, SAYING I DIDN’T KNOW THE EXTENT OF THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY OF THE PEOPLE I WAS LENDING MONEY TO.
AND, REMEMBER, THIS WAS ELECTRIC A FEDERALLY LICENSE    FROM A FEDERALLY LICENSED AND FEDERALLY INSURED INSTITUTION THAT THEN COLLAPSED, TRANSFERRING A $390

MILLION BILL ON TO THE BACK OF THE FDIC.

>> Phil Ponce: YOUR RESPONSE.

>> Alexi Giannoulias: SO I’M THRILLED.
YOU KNOW WHAT THE CONGRESSMAN CONTINUES TO CARRY THIS LIST AROUND.
HE TRIES, IT’S GUILT BY ASSOCIATION ATTACKS THAT DON’T WORK.
HE TRIES TO MALIGN MY FAMILY, MY FATHER’S BUSINESS, AND HE READ THE LIST.
I BROUGHT MY LIST AND IF WE WANT TO PLAY THESE GUILT BY ASSOCIATION ATTACKS, LET’S DO IT.
HE TOOK MONEY, THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM STUART LEVINE WHO PLED GUILTY TO CORRUPTION.
NICHOLAS HERKIN PLED GUILTY TO KICKBACK SCHEMES AND JOHN GLENON PLED GUILTY TO KICKBACK SCHEMES.
I CAN GO ON AND ON.
BUT, LOOK, THESE GUILT BY ASSOCIATION ATTACKS, PEOPLE AREN’T BUYING IT.
THEY ARE SICK OF IT.
LET’S ELEVATE THE CAMPAIGN AND TALK ABOUT IDEAS.
YOU CAN TALK ABOUT CRIMINALS WHO YOU TOOK MONEY FROM.
SO I WOULD LOVE TO TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES AND MOVE THIS CAMPAIGN FORWARD AND TALK ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTAL ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES BUT ONE OF THE REASONS THAT YOU

ARE GOING TO SEE THAT CONGRESSMAN KIRK TODAY DECIDED TO GO STRAIGHT NEGATIVE THROUGHOUT THIS CAMPAIGN IS BECAUSE HE HAD AN INDEFENSIBLE RECORD IN CONGRESS.
FOR THE RECORD, I HAVE DECIDED FOR THE REST OF THE CAMPAIGN TO GO POSITIVE.

>> Phil Ponce: FOR THE REST

>> Alexi Giannoulias: AND THE CONGRESSMAN.
IT’S IRONIC THAT TODAY HE PULLED ALL OF HIS POSITIVE ADS AND HE’S GOING STRAIGHT NEGATIVE.

>> Phil Ponce: LET’S GET YOUR RESPONSE TO THAT LIST.
ARE YOU AWARE THAT THESE DONORS ACCORDING TO MR. GIANNOULIAS HAVE CRIMINAL BACKGROUNDS?

>> Mark Kirk: WELL, SO MUCH WITH ALEXI GIANNOULIAS, WHEN YOU ARE DEBATING HIM, IT’S LIKE AND NOW THE REST OF THE STORY.
IT’S LIKE A PAUL HARVEY EPISODE.
WHAT HE DOESN’T SAY IS WE REFUNDED THE MONEY AS SOON AS WE KNEW ABOUT CRIMINAL PROBLEMS.
MANY OF THEM WE REFUNDED ALMOST A DECADE AGO.

>> Alexi Giannoulias: YOU REFUNDED ALL OF THESE CONTRIBUTIONS?

>> Mark Kirk: WELL, FOR EXAMPLE, STUART LEVINE AND NICHOLAS HERKINS, WHEN WE LOOK AT THIS I DIDN’T LEND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO TONY REZKO.

>> Alexi Giannoulias: YOU RECEIVED A CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION FROM TONY REZKO.

>> Mark Kirk: I DIDN’T INTERRUPT YOU.
I WOULD GIVE YOU THE RESPECT OF NOT INTERRUPTING YOU.

>> Alexi Giannoulias: YOU ALSO HAVE TO ANSWER PHIL’S QUESTION.

>> Mark Kirk: ARE YOU OKAY NOW?
CAN I TALK?

>> Alexi Giannoulias: SURE, GO AHEAD.
BE TRUTHFUL.

>> Mark Kirk: I’M GOING TO RESPECT MY OPPONENT AND LET HIM ANSWER AND THEN I WILL ANSWER.
WE REFUNDED THIS MONEY FROM, FOR EXAMPLE, STUART LEVINE AND WHEN YOU RUN BIG CAMPAIGNS, YOU WILL ACCEPT MONEY FROM A LOT OF PEOPLE BUT THEN WHEN YOU HEAR

ABOUT CRIMINAL PROBLEMS, YOU WILL REFUND IT.

WHAT I DIDN’T DO IS I DIDN’T LOAN MONEY TO TONY REZKO.
WHAT I DIDN’T DO IS RUN A BANK THAT HAD SO MANY RELATIONSHIPS WITH MOBSTERS AND FELONS.
WHAT I DIDN’T DO IS BET THE WHOLE BANK ON RISKY REAL ESTATE LOANS, A BROKERED HOT MONEY DEPOSITS.
“THE NEW YORK TIMES” ANALYSIS SHOWED LED TO THE COLLAPSE OF THIS INSTITUTION.
AND THEN A $390 MILLION BILL PAID BY THE FDIC.
BY THE WAY THAT WAS MY OPPONENT’S FIRST JOB.
HIS SECOND JOB WAS AS TREASURER FOR THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, IN WHICH HE PRESIDED OVER A STEADY COLLAPSE OF OUR STATE’S CREDIT RATING AND A LOSS OF COLLEGE

SAVINGS UNDER THE BRIGHT START PROGRAM.”

Giannoulias Rezko Obama. Another of many examples of politicians tied to corruption and crime in Chicago and IL and pay to play politics. Obama has been endorsing Giannoulias for years and both had money ties to rezko.

From Citizen Wells August 3, 2010.

““A new headache for Giannoulias? Another Rezko loan”

“By February 2006, businessman and political fixer Tony Rezko was already politically radioactive, caught up in a federal investigation that would see him criminally charged by the end of that year.

News reports had linked Rezko, a key adviser and campaign fund-raiser for then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, to shady deals involving state pension funds — among the crimes that ultimately would send him to prison.

This was the Tony Rezko who, looking for millions of dollars for a massive South Loop development, turned to Broadway Bank, owned by the family of Alexi Giannoulias. Giannoulias, the Democrat now running for U.S. Senate, had left his post as a senior loan officer at the Chicago bank in late 2005 to mount a successful campaign for Illinois state treasurer, though he still held an ownership stake in the bank.

Rezko’s company asked. And Broadway Bank came through.

On Feb. 14, 2006, newly obtained records show, the bank made a $22.75 million loan to a company called Riverside District Development LLC, whose owners, it turns out, included Rezko.”

“Giannoulias, who touted his experience at Broadway Bank in his campaign to win election as state treasurer, has said its failure was the result of the national economic slowdown and the pullback in the real estate market, in which it invested heavily.”

“Broadway Bank made the loan even though another Rezko company, Chicago Hudson LLC, had fallen behind on a $10.9 million loan it got from the bank four years earlier. That loan — for a proposed high-rise condo building at 750 N. Hudson on the Near North Side that never got built — ended up in Bankruptcy Court. The property ended up being sold to another developer. Broadway Bank received $11.5 million from the sale, which took place July 31, 2006.

Following Rezko’s indictment in October 2006, he and his lawyers met in January 2007 with U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve to discuss his assets. During that closed-door hearing, Rezko disclosed his ownership stake in Riverside District Development, the company that got the $22.75 million loan from Broadway Bank. Rezko’s lawyers said his main partner in Riverside was General Mediterranean Holding, a Luxembourg company controlled by Iraq-born billionaire Nadhmi Auchi.”

“According to Giannoulias and Auchi, Riverside District Development paid off the Broadway Bank loan with money it obtained from a $27 million loan from another financial institution: Mutual Bank.

Like Broadway Bank, Mutual also ended up getting shut down by federal regulators — though the loan was paid off, records show. Like Rezko, Mutual’s president, Amrish Mahajan, had been a top fund-raiser for Blagojevich.”

Obama returns to crime scene in Chicago, Giannoulias campaign, October 7, 2010, Audacity of corruption

“Giannoulias is so tainted by reputed mob links that several top Illinois Dems, including the state’s speaker of the House and party chairman, refused to endorse him even after he won the Democratic nomination with Obama’s help.”…Lynn Sweet, Chicago Sun-Times

From the Chicago Tribune September 26, 2010.

“Barack Obama will visit Chicago on Oct. 7 to campaign for Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias, a White House official said Sunday.

Giannoulias, the state treasurer, is running against U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., for the Senate seat Obama once held.

Obama plans to attend a fundraiser for Giannoulias and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the official said.”

You remember Giannoulias.

From Citizen Wells August 27, 2008.

“Like the ill-advised connection to Obama in Aurora, thanks to Dan Shomon, Obama is mentioned in the same discusion with all these problems with Giannoulias.”
“Shomon’s main activities are political campaigns and helping Obama and his friends like Alexi Giannoulias who is now the Treasurer for the State of Illinois.”
“We think it’s HIGHLY unethical of Dan Shomon or Tom Weisner to exploit the taxpayers of Aurora for political purpose. Barack Obama’s credibility is also risked in the process of Shomon and Weisner’s games at the expense of taxpayers.
“Aurora Mayor Thomas J. Weisner gave Shomon the lobbying gig in exchange for political work, including getting the endorsement of Barack Obama back in 2005 when Obama first said he would remain “neutral” in the heated mayoral race.”
“In the 2006 Democratic primary, for example, Obama endorsed first-time candidate Alexi Giannoulias for state treasurer despite reports about loans Giannoulias’ family-owned Broadway Bank made to crime figures. Records show Giannoulias and his family had given more than $10,000 to Obama’s campaign, which banked at Broadway.”

“Alexi Giannoulias, who became Illinois state treasurer last year after Obama vouched for him, has pledged to raise $100,000 for the senator’s Oval Office bid.

Before he promised to raise funds for Obama, Giannoulias bankrolled Michael “Jaws” Giorango, a Chicagoan twice convicted of bookmaking and promoting prostitution. “

Obama Giannoulias Rezko Auchi Mahajan, Obama still attending Giannoulias fundraiser?

For those of you who listened to my interview on the Chalice radio show this past Sunday night, most of the names mentioned below will sound familiar.

From the Chicago SunTimes August 2, 2010.

“A new headache for Giannoulias? Another Rezko loan”

“By February 2006, businessman and political fixer Tony Rezko was already politically radioactive, caught up in a federal investigation that would see him criminally charged by the end of that year.

Blagojevich trial, US Justice Department corruption, Protecting Obama, Part 5, Tony Rezko and Stuart Levine are best witnesses, Where is Tony Rezko?, Why hasn’t Rezko been sentenced?

Blagojevich trial, US Justice Department corruption, Protecting Obama, Part 5

“The last thing Sen. Barack Obama and Gov. Rod Blagojevich needed was that letter written by convicted Illinois influence peddler Tony Rezko promising he’d never rat out his pals.”…John Kass, Chicago tribune

“Federal authorities have obtained an arrest warrant for Rezko, who is believed to be traveling abroad.”..Rezko indictment press release
“That was when U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve learned he had received a $3.5 million wire transfer from a business associate abroad.”…Rezko trial transcripts

Blagojevich trial

Protecting Obama

Part 5

Where is Tony Rezko?

What unholy alliance prevented Tony Rezko from being called as a prosecution witness? Was it a pact between Rezko, Blagojevich and Obama? Is the US Justice Department complicit in a coverup? Was there pressure from entities in the Middle East? Perhaps a combination of those forces. In Blagojevich’s own words.

Citizen Wells August 28, 2008
“As his sentencing nears, pressure is mounting on Tony Rezko to cooperate with federal investigations into some of the highest-profile politicians in the state — including Gov. Blagojevich.”

“Now, sources tell the Chicago Sun-Times that Rezko has been seen at the federal courthouse as many as a dozen times since his June conviction. He’s been held since then at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago.”

“If Rezko’s cooperating, that would be a major development in “Operation Board Games,” the government’s ongoing probe into state boards that’s widened into a broader corruption probe.”

From the Chicago SunTimes October 9, 2008
“A federal judge this morning officially postponed the sentencing of political fund-raiser Tony Rezko as he continues his discussions with the government.

U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve indefinitely delayed Rezko’s Oct. 28 sentencing date and told the parties to meet again for a status in the case in December.
The sentencing, originally scheduled for Oct. 28, just before the election, was likely to bring unfavorable publicity to Rezko’s onetime friend Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Prosecutors and Rezko lawyers said this morning they did not want to set a future date for sentencing.

Rezko lawyer William Ziegelmueller said they sought the delay to “work together to agree to otherwise narrow differences at sentencing.”

The agreement comes as Rezko is talking to federal prosecutors. The Sun-Times first reported Rezko’s meetings with the feds in August and sources close to the investigation later confirmed the talks last month.”

From the Chicago SunTimes February 3, 2009

“Convicted businessman Tony Rezko — who is poised to become a crucial witness in the massive corruption case against ex-Gov. Blagojevich — was quietly moved out of a downtown jail and into another facility last month, the Sun-Times has learned.
Authorities seeking Rezko’s cooperation pushed for the move after Rezko complained about being held in the tough confines of solitary imprisonment, known as “the hole,” even as he was providing information to prosecutors, sources said.”

“Rezko’s relocation is a sign that even with thousands of taped conversations of the governor, investigators still highly value Rezko’s potential as a witness.”
“Rezko, who served as an adviser and fund-raiser to Blagojevich, provided authorities with substantial information involving the governor and bolstered pay-to-play testimony by former Illinois Finance Authority director Ali Ata, as well as talking about other alleged deals.”

From the Washington Examiner April 20, 2010.

“Where in the world is Tony Rezko?”

“Why is Antoin “Tony” Rezko under lock and key at an undisclosed location, like some sort of CIA-renditioned al Qaeda operative? And why hasn’t he been sentenced yet?

As the June 3 corruption trial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich for allegedly trying to sell Obama’s former Illinois Senate seat approaches, the whereabouts of the former Blago and Obama fundraiser is literally a state secret.”

“Rezko’s not listed on the federal Bureau of Prisons’ inmate locator, either.”

“Randall Samborn, spokesman for Fitzgerald, told The Examiner that Rezko “remains in federal custody,” although admitting that he didn’t know exactly where the convicted businessman was being held. Samborn also confirmed that “there is no sentencing date,” but would not elaborate. Sources in Chicago tell us that the long delay is “very unusual.””

“Is Rezko being held at another prison facility for his own safety? There are plenty of people in Chicago and Washington who might not want Rezko on the witness stand. They include:

Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias.

Rezko was such an enthusiastic customer of Giannoulias’ failing Broadway Bank that he wrote $450,000 in bad checks against his account to pay off gambling debts.

Alderman Eddie Burke

Rezko hired Burke’s law firm to get a 77 percent reduction in the real estate taxes of a 62-acre property along the Chicago River he planned to develop using $140 million in city subsidies. After assuring the Chicago Board of Ethics that he would abstain from any Council votes on Rezko’s project, Burke voted for it anyway, blaming his conflict of interest on “an error.” The project was later abandoned.

President Barack Obama

Rezko was the president’s “real estate fairy,” as one Chicago columnist likes to put it. Remember how they bought a house together in Chicago? Rezko was one of Obama’s earliest and biggest fundraisers and donors. Obama was one of his go-to guys for housing legislation in the Illinois state Senate.

If I were Tony Rezko, I’d be hiding, too.”

It is understandable why the Blagojevich defense team does not want Rezko on the stand. Judge Zagel’s comment about Rezko being a bad witness is at least horsecrap and reeks of conspiracy. Convicted felons of all categories are regularly used as witnesses. Stuart Levine, the key witness in the Rezko trial was not only enmeshed in corruption but was a long time drug user.
Here are the approximate number of times that “Rezko” is mentioned in US Justice Department documents.

Indictment:  100 times.

Criminal complaint:  170 times.

Evidentiary Proffer:  288 times.
Even if a strong argument is made against using Rezko as a witness, and good luck with that argument, Stuart Levine was used extensively as a witness in the Rezko trial, and his name was mentioned approx. 146 times in the Blagojevich Criminal Complaint. And don’t forget, Blagojevich’s name was mentioned at least 30 times on one day of the Rezko trial.

Patrick Fitzgerald, I am damn angry and am speaking up about US Justice Department corruption.

The Chicago Tribune just reported this:
“”I felt all along and believed all along that I was going to testify,” he said. But he said the government case wasn’t as they presented it, without calling witnesses  Antoin “Tony” Rezko and Stuart Levine, both convicted in the federal probe.”

Obama audacity of corruption, Alexi Giannoulias Chicago fundraiser, August 5, 2010, IL state treasurer, Chicago Tribune endorsed David Hoffman

Obama audacity of corruption, Alexi Giannoulias Chicago fundraiser

Here is another jaw dropping example of Obama audacity and corruption.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Obama will attend a fundraiser for Alexi Giannoulias on August 5, 2010. Before presenting that story, here is a memory refresher on Obama Giannoulias ties.

From Citizen Wells January 30, 2010
“We’ll leave it to voters to decide if linking Giannoulias to Rezko is a “smear job,” but the Daily Herald story does exist, and the Giannoulias camp knows it. Hoffman’s ad got the date wrong. Careless again. But it has allowed Giannoulias to present himself again as the victim.

None of this changes our opinion. As we wrote in our endorsement: Hoffman, the former inspector general for the city of Chicago, “is an incorruptible man who tells truth to power…”

Hoffman is the Democrats’ best choice to bring the highest ethical standards to the U.S. Senate.””

“From the Chicago tribune, June 12, 2007.

“Obama endorses Alexi Giannoulias for state treasurer”
“But Obama’s record of local endorsements — one measure of how he has used his nascent political clout — has drawn criticism from those who say it reflects his deference to Chicago’s established political order and runs counter to his public calls for clean government.

In the 2006 Democratic primary, for example, Obama endorsed first-time candidate Alexi Giannoulias for state treasurer despite reports about loans Giannoulias’ family-owned Broadway Bank made to crime figures. Records show Giannoulias and his family had given more than $10,000 to Obama’s campaign, which banked at Broadway.”

“From Source Watch

“Barack Obama and campaign contributor Alexi Giannoulias”
“Alexi Giannoulias—a “man who has long been dogged by charges that the bank his family owns helped finance a Chicago crime figure” and “who became Illinois state treasurer” in 2006 after Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) “vouched for him”—”pledged to raise $100,000 for the senator’s Oval Office bid,” Charles Hurt reported September 5, 2007, in the New York Post.[1]

The September 5, 2007, Chicago fundraiser was omitted from Obama’s public schedule and the event was closed to the press,” Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times reported.[2]

“Before he promised to raise funds for Obama, Giannoulias bankrolled Michael ‘Jaws’ Giorango, a Chicagoan twice convicted of bookmaking and promoting prostitution.”
“Obama and Giannoulias reportedly met on the basketball court “in the late 1990s … at the East Bank Club, a luxurious spot in downtown Chicago,” Jodi Kantor wrote June 1, 2007, in the New York Times.[3] Now, “thanks in part to [Obama’s] backing, [Giannoulias] is now the Illinois state treasurer. Other regular gymmates include the president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health and several investment bankers who were early and energetic fund-raisers,” Kantor wrote.”
“Obama the king maker”

“”Did U.S. Senator Barack Obama clear the field in the Democratic state treasurer’s race?” lawyer and political analyst Russ Stewart wrote January 4, 2006.”
“But none announced, and all deferred to Alexi Giannoulias, a 29-year-old Chicago investment banker who was an early supporter of Obama in his 2004 Senate race, whose father owns Broadway Bank, and whose family helped bankroll the Obama campaign. Giannoulias has said that he will campaign as a ‘progressive,’ and he has promised to put more than $1 million in family funds into the race,” Stewart wrote.”

“In March 2006, Giannoulias said that “his ‘good friend and mentor, Barack Obama,’ inspired him to run.””

From the Chicago Tribune July 18, 2010.

“President Barack Obama will headline a Chicago fundraiser on Aug. 5 for Democrat Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias, his campaign announced today.

The fundraiser announcement, which was confirmed by the White House, comes on the heels of the one-term state treasurer announcing that he is trailing Republican opponent Mark Kirk in fundraising by a significant margin.
“The President’s visit will reinforce the importance of the clear choice Illinois voters face” between Giannoulias and Kirk, a veteran North Shore congressman, Giannoulias campaign manager Mike Rendina said in a statement.
Giannoulias and Kirk are vying for the seat Obama held when he was elected president.”

Blagojevich trial, Obama testimony, Rezko trial, Rod Blagojevich did not testify, US District Judge James Zagel, Motion to subpoena Obama denied, Door still open for Obama as witness

Blagojevich trial, Obama testimony, Rezko trial, Rod Blagojevich did not testify

When Judge Zagel denied the Blagojevich defense team’s motion to subpoena Barack Obama for the Blagojevich trial, I did not think much of it. First of all it is early. Secondly, the defense motion was too general. And remember this, Rod Blagojevich did not testify at the Tony Rezko trial even though his name was mentioned often and he was under investigation.
The motion to subpoena Obama did serve a purpose. It sets the stage for witness testimony from Tony Rezko and others and certainly should make Obama squirm.
As stated, Rod Blagojevich’s name was mentioned repeatedly during the Rezko trial.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-rezko-court-story-7,0,5224754.htmlstory
Will Obama’s name surface often at the Blagojevich trial?

Judge James Zagel did not state that Obama would not testify.
“U.S. District Judge James Zagel said the defense motion seeking to subpoena the president fell “very short” of demonstrating the need to have him testify or submit to attorney questions regarding charges that Blagojevich sought to sell the U.S. Senate seat left vacant when Obama was elected in 2008.

Zagel did not completely shut the door on Obama testimony, however, telling the lawyers in the case he would see how the trial unfolds and could reconsider if something specific arises that the president can address.”

John Kass of the Chicago Tribune adds his humorous take on the judge’s ruling.
“The president might be advised to write to the judge: “Judge Zagel, you want me on that stand, you need me on that stand! Please, Judge Zagel, let me testify to show everyone I’m not a Chicago politician.”

All it takes is a few tokes of Hopium to imagine Obama, in a blue suit, maroon tie and white shirt, taking the witness stand. After ripping on Rezko for the Blagojevich side, he’d undergo cross-examination from some pesky government prosecutor.

What follows is a certified yet highly imaginary transcript of some future testimony.

Smarty Pants Lawyer: Isn’t it true, Mr. President, that in 2002, as an Illinois state senator, you told journalist Jeff Berkowitz, on tape, the following: “Right now, my main focus is to make sure we elect Rod Blagojevich as governor.”

Obama: Well, look. That’s not the Rod I knew.

Smarty Pants Lawyer: Isn’t it true, Mr. President, that in 2006, you wrote a letter to the voters of Cook County, vigorously endorsing the hapless Urkel of political Chicago, Todd Stroger, for County Board president?

Obama: Well, uh, look. At this point in time, to the best of my knowledge, I can’t recall.

Smarty Pants Lawyer: Did you not write, and I quote, “Todd is a good, progressive Democrat who will bring values and sensibility to the job”? Did you not write these words, sir?

Obama: That’s not the Todd I knew.

Smarty Pants Lawyer: And isn’t it true that in April of 2010, you publicly hugged Alexi Giannoulias and called him, and I quote, Illinois’ “soon-to-be senator”? Doesn’t that make you a real Chicago politician?

Obama: I decline to answer on the grounds that it might incriminate me.”

Blagojevich trial, News and insight, April 27, 2010, Blagojevich Obama Blackwell, Pay to play politics, Dan Shoman, Blagojevich and Blackwell, Alexi Giannoulias

Blagojevich trial, News and insight, April 27, 2010

Here is another Obama, Blagojevich triangle, another example of pay to play politics in Chicago, IL.
Remember the email I received from Robert Blackwell of Killerspin shortly after I followed up on the LA Times story about Obama, Blackwell and Dan Shoman, Obama’s former campaign manager?

Obama, Blagojevich, Blackwell
“The Los Angeles Times, in an article dated April 27, 2008 reveals
that Obama received a $8,000 a month retainer from Robert Blackwell
for his technology firm, Electronic Knowledge Interchange,
for a total of $112,000. The following exerpts are from the LA times
article:
“A few months after receiving his final payment from EKI, Obama sent a request on state Senate letterhead urging Illinois officials to provide a $50,000 tourism promotion grant to another Blackwell company, Killerspin.”

“With support from Obama, other state officials and an Obama aide who went to work part time for Killerspin, the company eventually obtained $320,000 in state grants between 2002 and 2004 to subsidize its tournaments.”

“But Obama portrays himself as a lawmaker dedicated to transparency and sensitive to even the appearance of a conflict of interest.”

“Killerspin’s owner, Blackwell, was a political supporter and friend as well. Both men lived on Chicago’s South Side. Blackwell, a savvy and successful entrepreneur, was one of the first donors to Obama’s early campaigns, including the state senator’s failed bid for a congressional seat in 2000. In the presidential race he is credited on Obama’s website with committing to raise $100,000 to $200,000 for Obama’s campaign.””

Robert Blackwell and Rod Blagojevich

The following is from a news release by EKI Consulting:

“BLACKWELL JR. NAMED TO ILLINOIS GOVERNOR’S TRANSITION TEAM

November 11, 2002

CHICAGO – Robert Blackwell Jr., CEO and founder of Electronic Knowledge Interchange Inc., has been named to the transition team of Governor-elect Rod Blagojevich.

Blackwell’s appointment to the 14-member group was announced at a downtown news conference. The transition team will advise Blagojevich on putting together his state government management operation. Blagojevich will be sworn into office on January 13 and the transition team meets next week. “”

From above:

“With support from Obama, other state officials and an Obama aide who went to work part time for Killerspin”
The Obama aide was more than just an aide.
“Dan Shomon was a long time employee of Robert Blackwell and Barack Obama as well as main political advisor to Obama.

Obama initiated the request for Robert Blackwell company Killerspin to receive a grant from Illinois and made the request on official Illinois Senate stationery.

Shoman, while an employee of both Blackwell and Obama secured grants for Blackwell company Killerspin:
$200,000 grant for its 2003 tournament
$100,000 grant for its 2004 tournament”

“Obama supported the re-election of Gov. Rod Blagojevich, whose administration is embroiled in corruption probes.

EKI, a Blackwell company, gave $20,000 to Blagojevich.
Electronic Knowledge Interchange won $6 million in technology consulting and software development contracts. EKI did no state
work until after Blagojevich took office.

Robert Blackwell Companies gave the following to Obama’s campaign in 2007:

BLACKWELL CONSULTING SERVICES $9,200.00
EKI  $6,925.00
KILLERSPIN  $16,500.00
(* reference 3)

Dan Shoman was referred to as an Obama aide in the LA Times article but he was much more than that:
October 2002
“He (Obama) consulted with Shoman, still his main political adviser”
(* reference 4)

April 13, 2006

Blagojevich trial, Update, Tony Rezko, Obama subpoena, Obama Rezko ties

Where is Tony Rezko, convicted crime buddy of Blagojevich and Obama?

From the Washington Examiner.

“Where in the world is Tony Rezko?”

“Why is Antoin “Tony” Rezko under lock and key at an undisclosed location, like some sort of CIA-renditioned al Qaeda operative? And why hasn’t he been sentenced yet?

As the June 3 corruption trial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich for allegedly trying to sell Obama’s former Illinois Senate seat approaches, the whereabouts of the former Blago and Obama fundraiser is literally a state secret.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Rezko was moved from Chicago’s downtown Metropolitan Correctional Center on December 16th, even though it’s right across the street from the federal courthouse where Blago will be tried.

Rezko’s not listed on the federal Bureau of Prisons’ inmate locator, either.

“Nobody knows where he is,” a source in Chicago told The Examiner.

The other big question: Why hasn’t Rezko been sentenced yet? It’s been almost two years since the Chicago restaurant and real estate developer was convicted on bribery, fraud and money laundering charges.

After months of unexplained delays, Rezko’s January 6th sentencing date was canceled again – this time indefinitely – by U.S. District Court Judge Amy St. Eve, a former Whitewater prosecutor. Reporters were initially told that Rezko was cooperating with prosecutors, but he apparently stopped talking and demanded to be sentenced as soon as possible. That request was obviously denied.”

From the recent motion to subpoena Barack Obama from the Blagojevich defense team we know this.

“22. However, the defense has a good faith belief that Mr. Rezko, President Obama’s
former friend, fund-raiser, and neighbor told the FBI and the United States Attorneys
a different story about President Obama. In a recent in camera proceeding, the
government tendered a three paragraph letter indicating that Rezko “has stated
in interviews with the government that he engaged in election law violations by
personally contributing a large sum of cash to the campaign of a public official
who is not Rod Blagojevich. … Further, the public official denies being aware of
cash contributions to his campaign by Rezko or others and denies having
conversations with Rezko related to cash contributions. … Rezko has also stated
in interviews with the government that he believed he transmitted a quid pro quo
offer from a lobbyist to the public official, whereby the lobbyist would hold a
fundraiser for the official in exchange for favorable official action, but that the
public official rejected the offer. The public official denies any such
conversation. In addition, Rezko has stated to the government that he and the
public official had certain conversations about gaming legislation and
administration, which the public official denies having had.”10

10 The defense has a good faith belief that this public official is Barack Obama. See, “Obama on Rezko deal: It
was a mistake”, Dave McKinney, Chris Fusco, and Mark Brown, Chicago Sun Times, November 5, 2006. Senator
Barack Obama was asked: “Did Rezko or his companies ever solicit your support on any matter involving state or
federal government? Did Al Johnson, who was trying to get a casino license along with Tony Rezko, or Rezko
himself ever discuss casino matters with you?” Senator Obama answered: “No, I have never been asked to do
anything to advance his business interest. In 1999, when I was a State Senator, I opposed legislation to bring a
casino to Rosemont and allow casino gambling at docked riverboats which news reports said Al Johnson and Tony
Rezko were interested in being part of. I never discussed a casino license with either of them. I was a vocal
opponent of the legislation.” Obama’s involvement with Tony Rezko and this legislation coincides with the
three paragraph summary the government has provided to the defense referenced above.”

Apparently Tony Rezko is talking. And don’t forget, there are plenty more of Blagojevich’s and Obama’s cronies who may talk to get a lighter sentence. Stuart Levine has talked plenty already.

Chicago Tribune supports David Hoffman, Obama endorsed Alexi Giannoulias in 2006 Democratic primary, IL Democrat Senate primary, Giannoulias gave $10000 to Obama’s campaign, Obama Giannoulias Progressives

The Chicago Tribune supports David Hoffman, opponent of Alexi Giannoulias, who had close ties to Barack Obama and Chicago corruption figures. Hoffman and Giannoulias are competing in the Democrat primary for the former senate seat of Obama.
From the Chicago tribune, January 28, 2010.
“Once again: Hoffman”

“An honest mistake, yes, and a careless one. But it was handled with the forthright integrity we’ve come to expect from Hoffman. And for all the whining from the Giannoulias camp about negative attacks, it’s the only statement whose factual basis has been challenged successfully. Unless you count this: In a press release this week, Giannoulias accuses Hoffman of citing a “non-existent Daily Herald story” in an ad that references loans made by Giannoulias’ family bank to convicted influence-peddler Tony Rezko.

“David Hoffman should stop insulting voters, take down this smear job and put up an ad talking about jobs,” it says.

We’ll leave it to voters to decide if linking Giannoulias to Rezko is a “smear job,” but the Daily Herald story does exist, and the Giannoulias camp knows it.

Senate.”

From the Chicago tribune, June 12, 2007.

From Source Watch

“In March 2006, Giannoulias said that “his ‘good friend and mentor, Barack Obama,’ inspired him to run.”

In fact, Giannoulias’ “endorsers” were “essentially the base of the Obama coalition: white north side progressives and south side blacks.””

Post Obama Chicago?

Obama indictment, Obama must be arrested, Patrick Fitzgerald, Blagojevich arrest, Raghuveer P. Nayak seeks immunity, December 22, 2008, Obama Rezko Levine Weinstein Blagojevich,Nayak, Pay to play, Chicago corruption, US Dept of Justice, IL corruption, Will Nayak talk?

Why Barack Obama should be indicted

Part 12

One or more of the following events should happen:

  • Obama steps down.
  • Obama is forced to prove eligibility.
  • Obama is indicted and/or arrested.

If one of the above does not occur within a few months,
perhaps we should look to the Declaration of Independence
or Thomas Jefferson, for our next strategy.

Raghuveer P. Nayak, the unnamed “Individual D” referred
to in the Rod Blagojevich criminal complaint, is seeking
immunity. This is making news because of the Blagojecvich
arrest and potential ties the Obama appointees. However,
like so many names mentioned in the context of Chicago and
IL corrupton, Nayak has ties to Barack Obama and Rod
Blagojevich that go back for years.

Nayak’s recent involvement

“A mysterious “Individual D” in the ongoing Illinois political
scandal to auction off President-elect Barack Obama’s vacant
U.S. Senate seat has now been identified as Raghuveer Nayak,
a millionaire Chicago area Indian businessman whose voice
turned up on FBI wiretaps and bugs of Democratic Gov. Rod
Blagojevich.

Nayak is “Individual D” in the criminal complaint outlining
the case against the governor, according to an exclusive
story in Monday’s Chicago Tribune. Nayak is heard on the
tapes being squeezed by Blagojevich to raise campaign money
in return for naming Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. to Obama’s vacant
seat.

Nayak, one of a savvy band of local moneymen who help fund
the state’s Democratic political machine year-in-and-out,
is now reportedly negotiating with federal prosecutors for
immunity in return for his testimony.”

Move Over Rezko; Weisner-Blagojevich Crony Raghuveer Nayak
Continues to Spend Thousands on Elected Officials…in Iowa?

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner, boytoy Gerry Galloway and
crony Raghuveer Nayak are viewing a property in downtown
Aurora in the path of a major development back in 2005.
Nayak is spreading his money around. All the way to Iowa.”

“Raghuveer Nayak, the campaign crony who has dumped tens of
thousands of dollars into the campaign pockets of Aurora
Mayor Tom Weisner and Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, seems
to in a race to compete with another star campaign donor
from Illinois, Tony Rezko, to see how many people he can
contribute to and apparently “influence.”

While Rezko’s list includes some power names in Illinois,
including our local political rockstar, U.S. Senator and
Presidential candidate Barack Obama, Nayak seems to be
broadening his geographical reach (and Nayak is a Hillary
 Clinton buddy).”

Obama money woes in 2000

“After an unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 2000, Illinois
state Sen. Barack Obama faced serious financial pressure:
numerous debts, limited cash and a law practice he had
neglected for a year. Help arrived in early 2001 from a
significant new legal client — a longtime political
supporter.

Chicago entrepreneur Robert Blackwell Jr. paid Obama an
$8,000-a-month retainer to give legal advice to his growing
technology firm, Electronic Knowledge Interchange. It
allowed Obama to supplement his $58,000 part-time state
Senate salary for over a year with regular payments from
Blackwell’s firm that eventually totaled $112,000.”

Obama and Shomon help Blackwell get state grants

The Case Against Barack Obama reveals Shomon connection

Shomon connections to Weisner and Aurora, IL

“Dan Shomon, who’s background is in media, has a lobbying
contract for the City of Aurora (scroll down or click for
our post on how Dan Shomon is fleecing the taxpayers of
Aurora). He got that contract after helping to secure a
political endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama for then-candidate
for Mayor of Aurora, Tom Weisner. That’s after
Obama said he wan’t going to be a “kingmaker” in Aurora.

We think it’s HIGHLY unethical of Dan Shomon or Tom Weisner
to exploit the taxpayers of Aurora for political purpose.
Barack Obama’s credibility is also risked in the process of
Shomon and Weisner’s games at the expense of taxpayers.”

“Like the ill-advised connection to Obama in Aurora, thanks
to Dan Shomon, Obama is mentioned in the same discusion with
all these problems with Giannoulias. Not good for a
political rockstar who otherwise could be on his way to
becoming President of the United States.”

“Aurora Mayor Thomas J. Weisner gave Shomon the lobbying
gig in exchange for political work, including getting the
endorsement of Barack Obama back in 2005 when Obama first
said he would remain “neutral” in the heated mayoral race.

Shomon’s main activities are political campaigns and helping
Obama and his friends like Alexi Giannoulias who is now the
Treasurer for the State of Illinois.”

“Plus, when all hell breaks loose on Weisner’s various problems
with cronyism and allegations of corruption (and it WILL),
it’s probably in Obama’s interest that Dan Shomon has nothing
to do with Weisner any longer.”

Shoman, Obama’s main political adviser in 2002

“He consulted with Shoman, still his main political adviser
at the time, and Shomon told him…if Saltzman was urging him
to speak, he could not refuse. Moreover, Obama was trying to
draw Axelrod onto his Senate campaign team. It would not be
wise to disappoint Saltzman if he wanted her to continue
lobbying Axelrod on his behalf. So Obama agreed to speak…Obama
made the decision to protest the impending war in part as a
political calculation that he hoped would benefit him among
Democrats…”

Obama, Shomon, Blackwell, Blagojevich

“Robert Blackwell Jr., CEO and founder of Electronic Knowledge

Governor-elect Rod Blagojevich.”

Electronic Knowledge Interchange Inc. news release

“In one case, a firm that has given $20,000 to the governor
and is owned by a member of one of his transition-team committees
did no state work until after Blagojevich took office, records
show. During the last two years, Electronic Knowledge Interchange
has won $6 million in technology consulting and software
development contracts.
Dan Shomon, a spokesman for EKI, said the company never was
pressured to give to the governor.”

Blagojevich, Blackwell pay for play

We will learn more about Raghuveer P. Nayak in the coming days
and we can expect that he will be added to the list of informants
that will provide more information about the ties of Rod Blagojevich
and Barack Obama to corruption in Chicago and IL. It is already
apparent that Nayak was involved in the web of corruption that
ensnared Obama.

We urge to to read as much as possible about Obama’s ties to many
corruption figures in Chicago and IL, share this information with
as many people as possible and let the US Dept. of Justice know
how concerned you are.
