The truth in print in NC.

I met with John Hammer of the Rhino Times this morning.

I am a long time reader and fan of the Rhino (Rhinoceros) Times, published in Greensboro, NC and with coverage of one of the larger metro areas in NC. Sadly, due to high debt brought on by the economy, the Rhino Times has been forced to shut down its publication.

The Rhino Times exposed the truth about local politicians and officials and John Hammer wrote the truth about Barack Obama.

I’d like to thank all of our readers for making a point of picking up The Rhino Times for the past 21 years and I wish we could continue to provide you with the news, opinion and humor every week that you have come to expect, but we have simply run out of money. Like a lot of small businesses, we took a huge hit in 2008, and although we have done everything we could think of, we simply can no longer pay our bills.

Newspapers got hit with the double whammy of the recession and increasing competition from the internet, and we join a long list of newspapers that have closed their doors.

I would especially like to thank our advertisers, some of whom have been advertising with us for over a decade. We appreciate their support. They are the ones who have been footing the bill for us to bring you The Rhino every week.

And I’d like to thank our employees.”

The results of the Sheriff Joe Arpaio investigation of Obama’s birth certificate, Selective Service Application and other records are beginning to surface and a news conference is expected soon. Press coverage, though often biased is increasing. It is good to see Obama questioned in print in NC.

“Finally some reporters are doing some investigation of the life of President Obama. The left has done a great job of making anyone who asks any questions about Obama’s past out to be crazy.

People who just wanted to see Obama’s birth certificate, not anymore than Obama would have to show if he wanted to play Little League baseball, are called “birthers” and are by definition the same folks who see black helicopters hovering over their houses every night. The left has done a remarkably good job of defining people who just wanted to see proof that Obama was born in the United States as nutcases. His Republican opponent in that last election, Sen. John McCain, went to court and proved that even though he was born in Panama, he met the definition of a “natural born citizen.” Obama facing the same challenge went to court and said that he didn’t have to prove that he was a “natural born citizen.”

As it turns out, people had good reason to ask that question about Obama, because for years Obama claimed to have been born in Kenya. He was listed as born in Kenya in his publisher’s biography. That was no doubt done to boost book sales, but it is either evidence that Obama was born in Kenya or evidence that he is not a very honest person. In some of the information about Obama when he was running for the Senate is information that Obama was born in Kenya. Once again it makes him seem more exotic and was supposed to win him more votes, and unless you’re running for president it doesn’t make any difference where you were born.”

Community newspapers like The Rhino are what keep the politicians honest (well, sort of…), the schools on their toes to the benefit of our children and police departments ever vigilant lest a reporter be watching what they do.
I’m wondering if your community realizes the ramifications of The Rhino’s death? The beasts ever watchful eye will be closed, the consequence of the “Hammer” coming down on the mis-behaving will be silenced, the publcs right to know what the hell their elected officials are doing behind the scenes will be muted.
I have personally benefited from the glorious Rhino and their intrepid founders,John and Elaine Hammer. They took in this homeless reporter during the political corruption trial of John Edwards and out of the goodness of their hearts gave her a quiet place to write and a fuzzy cat to pet.
Please, everyone who reads this – send in a donation. Help the Hammers continue their good works on the internet.

Unlike newspapers in general, they depended solely on advertisers and printed the truth.

With a bit of sadness I report and mourn the loss of the Rhinoceros Times, a conservative weekly newspaper and website published in Greensboro, NC.

The truth in print in NC.

However, as the saying goes, every closed door leads to an open door.

Let’s hope so for the sake of publisher John Hammer and the truth.

“The Rhinoceros Times newspaper in Greensboro closes”

“After more than 21 years, Rhinoceros Times publisher John Hammer says Greensboro’s conservative weekly newspaper has published its last issue.

“We just ran out of money,” Hammer said in an interview Tuesday.

In a post to the free weekly’s website Tuesday morning, Hammer wrote that the paper is hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. He asked for reader donations to help pay off creditors.

The paper’s website will keep going for as long as it can, Hammer said — but having laid off all his paid staff Tuesday, he isn’t sure what it will look like.

“I’m still enormously interested in local politics,” Hammer said. “That hasn’t changed just because we’ve run out of money.”

Hammer said print advertising just dried up. An aborted attempt to expand into Charlotte also lost the company a lot of money, Hammer said. The paper pulled out of Charlotte in 2008.

Hammer said he met with a series of potential buyers and investors but couldn’t put together a deal to save the paper. It isn’t yet clear what will become of the paper’s offices on Market Street, he said.

Scott Yost, the paper’s Guilford County editor and columnist, said staffers will land on their feet but the community will feel the loss of the Rhino.

“I feel like we’ve been a real asset,” Yost said. “I feel like we’ve uncovered a lot of scandal, and a lot of politicians and leaders didn’t get away with things because of us.”

The Rhino freely mixed news writing with editorial comment and came at every story from a conservative point of view — something Hammer said they never denied.

But the paper also crusaded for more transparency in local government, Hammer said, reporting on politicians meeting in secret and publishing an annual salary list of every county and city employee.

The Rhino’s combative nature and conservative message made it popular with area Republicans, a number of whom it championed for local office.

“The Rhino was very important for conservatives and how we got our message out,” said Linda Shaw, the chairwoman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

“I hate to see them go,” Commissioner Jeff Phillips said in agreement.

“I’ll miss the constant presence of their conservative message and Scott Yost at all our meetings,” Phillips said. “It’s hard to imagine Guilford County politics without the Rhino.”

Not everyone was sorry to hear about the paper’s demise.”

Looks like Obama has picked the right attorney.

“The Democratic Party of Georgia determines names to include on its Presidential Preference Primary ballot at its sole discretion. O.C.G.A. 21 -2-193. A state political party “enjoys a constitutionally protected freedom which includes the right to identify the people who constitute this association to those people only.”
“Furthermore, the citizenship issue the plaintiff seeks to raise was soundly rejected by 69,456,897 Americans in the 2008 elections, as it has been by every judicial body ever to have considered it.”

My response.

The GA Democratic Party may put anyone they want on the ballot. However, that right does not trump the US Constitution dictate that the president must be a natural born citizen. GA election law clearly provides the Secretary of State and electors the power to challenge the qualifications of candidates. Also, to my knowledge, no court in this country has ruled that Obama is a natural born citizen.

I was born and raised in NC, have some experience reading legal documents and we also have some good dictionaries in NC. I have read the motion from Mr. Jablonski as well as the 2008 and 2011 versions of Georgia election laws. I will leave it for the reader to evaluate the accuracy of the following statements by Michael Jablonski in the hope that good dictionaries and logical thought capabilities exist in other parts of the country.

From the motion filed December 16, 2011 by attorney  Michael Jablonski.

“President Obama asks for dismissal of this attempt to deprive the Democratic Party of Georgia of its statutory right to name candidates to the Presidential Preference Party held to apportion Gerogia’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention. No provision of Georgia law authorizes a challenge to a political party’s identification of names it wishes its members to consider in a preference primary for purposes of apportioning delegates to its National Convention.The Democratic Party of Georgia properly identified Barack Obama as a candidate to whom National Convention delegates will be pledged based upon votes in the preference poll. Georgia law does not authorize the Secretary of State to exercise any discretion or oversight over the actions of a political party participating in a preference primary. Indeed, any review by the Secretary of State would interfere with associational rights of the Democratic Party guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.”
“The Time Limit for filing any challenge under O.C.G.A. 21-2-5 (if it appplies) specifies a two week period after qualifying in which a challenge can be filed.”

Such lists shall be published on the website of the Secretary of State during the fourth week immediately preceding the date on which the presidential preference primary is to be held.”

Within two weeks after the deadline for qualifying, any elector who is eligible to vote for a candidate may challenge the qualifications of the candidate by filing a written complaint with the Secretary of State giving the reasons why the elector believes the candidate is not qualified to seek and hold the public office for which he or she is offering. Upon his or her own motion or upon a challenge being filed, the Secretary of State shall notify the candidate in writing that his or her qualifications are being challenged and the reasons therefor and shall advise the candidate that he or she is requesting a hearing on the matter before an administrative law judge of the Office of State Administrative Hearings pursuant to Article 2 of Chapter 13 of Title 50 and shall inform the candidate of the date, time, and place of the hearing when such information becomes available. The administrative law judge shall report his or her findings to the Secretary of State.

(c) The Secretary of State shall determine if the candidate is qualified to seek and hold the public office for which such candidate is offering. If the Secretary of State determines that the candidate is not qualified, the Secretary of State shall withhold the name of the candidate from the ballot or strike such candidate’s name from the ballot if the ballots have been printed. If there is insufficient time to strike the candidate’s name or reprint the ballots, a prominent notice shall be placed at each affected polling place advising voters of the disqualification of the candidate and all votes cast for such candidate shall be void and shall not be counted.”

Such primary shall be held in each year in which a presidential election is to be conducted on a date selected by the Secretary of State which shall not be later than the second Tuesday in June in such year. The Secretary of State shall select such date no later than December 1 of the year immediately preceding such primary. A state political party or body may by rule choose to elect any portion of its delegates to that party’s or body’s presidential nominating convention in the primary; and, if a state political party or body chooses to elect any portion of its delegates, such state political party or body shall establish the qualifying period for those candidates for delegate and delegate alternate positions which are to be elected in the primary and for any party officials to be elected in the primary and shall also establish the date on which state and county party executive committees shall certify to the Secretary of State or the superintendent, as the case may be, the names of any such candidates who are to be elected in the primary; provided, however, that such dates shall not be later than 60 days preceding the date on which the presidential preference primary is to be held.”

   A result of a primary or election may be contested on one or more of the following grounds:

   (1) Misconduct, fraud, or irregularity by any primary or election official or officials sufficient to change or place in doubt the result;

   (3) When illegal votes have been received or legal votes rejected at the polls sufficient to change or place in doubt the result;

   (4) For any error in counting the votes or declaring the result of the primary or election, if such error would change the result; or

   (5) For any other cause which shows that another was the person legally nominated, elected, or eligible to compete in a run-off primary or election.”

“A west Georgia business owner is stirring up controversy with signs he posted on his company’s trucks, for all to see as the trucks roll up and down roads, highways and interstates:

“New Company Policy: We are not hiring until Obama is gone.”

“Can’t afford it,” explained the employer, Bill Looman, Tuesday evening. “I’ve got people that I want to hire now, but I just can’t afford it. And I don’t foresee that I’ll be able to afford it unless some things change in D.C.”

Looman’s company is U.S. Cranes, LLC.  He said he put up the signs, and first posted pictures of the signs on his personal Facebook page, six months ago, and he said he received mostly positive reaction from people, “about 20-to-one positive.”

But for some reason, one of the photos went viral on the Internet on Monday.

And the reaction has been so intense, pro and con, he’s had to have his phones disconnected because of the non-stop calls, and he’s had to temporarily shut down his company’s website because of all the traffic crashing the system.

Looman made it clear, talking with 11Alive’s Jon Shirek, that he is not refusing to hire to make some political point; it’s that he doesn’t believe he can hire anyone, because of the economy. And he blames the Obama administration.”

“”The Secret Service left here, they were in a good mood and laughing,” Looman said. “I got the feeling they thought it was kind of ridiculous, and a waste of their time.”

So Bill Looman is keeping the signs up, and the photos up — stirring up a lot of debate.

“I just spent 10 years in the Marine Corps protecting the rights of people… the First Amendment, and the Second Amendment and the [rest of the] Bill of Rights,” he said. “Lord knows they’re calling me at 2 in the morning, all night long, and voicing their opinion. And I respect their right to do that. I’m getting a reaction, a lot of it’s negative, now. But a lot of people are waking up.”"

For anyone watching the internet being scrubbed or updated with revisionist history, the following will resonate:

I just received an email from American Family Association.

“Because of your action, public school drops suspension of Christian teacher
AFA Action Alert put pressure on school board to respond immediately
August 24, 2011″

“On Monday, AFA asked you to take action on behalf of Florida teacher Jerry Buell, who was unconstitutionally suspended by the Lake County school administration for posting his support for traditional marriage on his Facebook page.

Directly related to your taking action, along with other Christians, sending tens of thousands of emails to the Lake County School Board, the school has immediately rescinded its suspension of Mr. Buell and he will be back in his classroom tomorrow morning!

According to a just-held press conference by Mr. Buell and his legal representation, Liberty Counsel Attorney Harry Mihet, outside the Lake County Board of Education Administration Building, the school board acknowledged it violated Mr. Buell’s First Amendment rights by suspending him.

The US Constitution has been trampled on again. Jerry Buell, a teacher at Mount Dora High School in Florida, was suspended for exercising his First Amendment Rights on his personal time.

From an email from American Family Association August 22, 2011.

“A Florida teacher has been suspended and removed from the classroom in Mount Dora, Florida, for comments made on his Facebook page against homosexual “marriage.” Liberty Counsel will be representing the teacher in court.

Says Mr. Buell, “It was my own personal comment on my own personal time on my own personal computer in my own personal house, exercising what I believed as a social studies teacher to be my First Amendment rights.”

It’s worth noting that Florida’s constitution prohibits recognition of same-sex marriage, the exact view Mr. Buell supports. In essence, he is now being accused of hate speech for expressing a view enshrined in the state constitution.”

“Harry Mihet, the Liberty Counsel attorney representing Buell, notes that the 22-year-plus veteran of teaching is a very popular and successful teacher.
 
“In fact, he was elected as teacher of the year last year precisely because he has an outstanding reputation — not only for being an excellent teacher, but also for loving each and every student who comes across in his classroom regardless of the student’s status or lifestyle or orientation,” the attorney shares.
 
Mihet says it is worth noting that the person who filed the complaint has never been a student in Buell’s classroom. The school is concerned that homosexual students might feel uncomfortable or somehow threatened in his classes. Mihet comes to his client’s defense.
 
“It is an outrageous insinuation that somehow being against homosexual marriage disqualifies you from being a public servant,” he responds. “[That's] an idea that is so repugnant to the Constitution and to the First Amendment freedom of speech, one of our most cherished freedoms that is supposed to enable us to speak out on matters of public importance.”
 
Mihet believes the school district’s response to Buell’s comments is unconstitutional. Liberty Counsel is demanding that he be immediately reinstated with an apology from the school district.”

“So what do you give a beleaguered president who just ate a mess of birthday barbecue with his friends from Chicago?

Disappoint-mints.

Yes, Disappoint-mints, the breath mints with President Barack Obama’s likeness on the cover.

After you chow down on some baby backs and corn and birthday burgers while roughly 9 percent of the nation is out of work and thinking about dog food recipes, there’s only thing that’ll freshen your barbecue breath.

Mints in a box with Obama’s face and the slogan:

“This is Change? Disappoint-mints.”

With the economy tanking and overwhelmingly high unemployment rates, and the nation’s supply of Hopium running dangerously low, who wouldn’t want something sweet and tasty?

Like a Disappoint-mint.

They were on sale at the University of Tennessee bookstore for only $2.99 when an angry Democratic state legislator, Joe Armstrong, declared the mints were offensive.

He insisted that those offensive mints be removed from the shelves.

You’d think a Democrat would support a diversity of mints and champion equal opportunity of flavors, but with Obama in political trouble, tolerance becomes a casualty.

Armstrong got angry. The meek University of Tennessee caved. And those insensitive Obama Disappoint-mints were yanked off the shelves.

“… When you operate on state and federal dollars, you ought to be sensitive to those type of politically specific products,” the Knoxville News Sentinel quoted Armstrong as saying. “If it was a private entity or corporation or store, (that’s different), but this is a state university. We certainly don’t want in any way to put the university in a bad light by having those political (products), particularly aimed at defaming the president.”

Armstrong, who will be known henceforth as Mr. Free Speech, told the newspaper that pulling the mints off the shelves did not violate the First Amendment, because the mints were not “educational material.”

In other words, Armstrong is a complete moron and is just making up random stuff in the name of Obama.

“With a book or something of that nature, then fine, but (the mints are) sort of a discretionary product they have,” Armstrong told the News Sentinel. “It wasn’t viewpoint-neutral. Very specifically insulting to the president.”

We called Glenn Reynolds, professor of law at the University of Tennessee and boss of the widely read blog Instapundit.

“My first response is that there’s no candy exception in the First Amendment,” said Reynolds.

“… But it’s far more suppressive when a legislator travels down there in person and demands that they be taken off the shelf,” he said.

Reynolds said that with the election coming up, people will have to learn to be more thick-skinned.

That’s the noble ideal. But it seems to me that as elections near, skins tend to stretch thinner and thinner.”

“Obama insists that government can lift the country out of recession, but all the meddling has made it worse, and Thursday’s drop of more than 500 points in the Dow Jones Industrial Average highlights the futility.

So many Americans are nervous. And political hacks like Joe Armstrong are merely a symptom.

But all that can change.

All we’ve got to do is ban all the Disappoint-mints.”

the Mall, is a promissory note. That note had not been fulfilled for
African Americans. But I would say the Constitution remains a
promissory note, one in which “We the People” in each generation try
to create that more perfect union.”

The primary motive for this article was to make money for Time. I get that.

However, the article is so full of half truths and lies mingled with some truths, lib speak and orwellian speak, it is difficult to react to it in a rationale manner. I do not want to be the proverbial person arguing with the fool .

First, “Here are a few things the framers did not know about:”

What is their point? The founders were intimately familiar with tyranny and far more hardships that I hope that we ever know.

Second, “Tea Party and its almost fanatical focus on
the founding document.”

In typical left wing fashion they insult decent Americans who uphold and defend the Constitution. Is breathing, drinking water and eating fanaticism?

Third, “If the Constitution was intended to limit the federal government, it
sure doesn’t say so.” The founding fathers realized that the original Constitution focused too much power in the federal branch and added the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments. The Tenth Amendment alone makes it clear that the Federal government is not all powerful.

Fourth, “is also a nation that makes it constitutionally
impossible for someone who was not physically born here to run for
President. (Yes, the framers had their reasons for that, but those
reasons have long since vanished.)” In typical left wing arrogant fashion, they know more than the out dated old fuddy duddies.

And lastly, my ending response to the article ending.

“A constitution in and of itself guarantees nothing. Bolshevik Russia
had a constitution, as did Nazi Germany. Cuba and Libya have
constitutions. A constitution must embody something that is in the
hearts of the people. In the midst of World War II, the great judge
Learned Hand gave a speech in New York City’s Central Park that came
to be known as “The Spirit of Liberty.” It was a dark time, with
freedom and liberty under threat in Europe. Hand noted that we are
Americans by choice, not birth. That we are Americans precisely
because we seek liberty and freedom — not only freedom from oppression
but freedom of speech and belief and action. “What do we mean when we
say that first of all we seek liberty?” he asked. “I often wonder
whether we do not rest our hopes too much upon constitutions, upon
laws and upon courts.”

If you read the above carefully, they make my point. That is, we had a upheld, intact Constitution that allowed Learned Hand to speak. Perhaps if the good citizens of Nazi Germany had rested their ” hopes too much upon constitutions, upon laws and upon courts” a disaster could have been avoided.

It’s the Constitution stupid!
