Memorial Day History

“Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women’s groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, “Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping” by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication “To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead” (Source: Duke University’s Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860′s tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.”

    NEWS FLASH

    this from http://news.goldseek.com

    INTERPOL & THE LIST
Word has come to the Jackass desk from a very different location, two of whose university chums serve on an elite commission in Central Europe. Recall the stories of a mid-December landing of a planeload of Interpol agents and cops. Recall the announcement by President Obama in January of strong subpoena power granted to Interpol operating in the United States, a story that should have sent shivers through the press networks. Instead, it was duly reported and forgotten, a typical syndicate tactic. The subpoena power is not to be dismissed. It enables Interpol agents and cops to obtain documents, to force testimony, and to investigate with some teeth. My source tells of how the Interpol has been ON THE GROUND IN THE UNITED STATES FOR MONTHS doing their work, building a case against corrupt bankers. The same source told of how last August 2009, at least thirty former USDept Treasury officials and Wall Street executives together appealed to Interpol, turned state’s evidence, and were granted asylum. They arrived with much damaging evidence in the form of documents, emails, CDs, trading logs, and personal testimony. The information gained has been used for several months in criminal investigations of very high order. Much progress has come, but it is not shared publicly. Finally, lists are being compiled for Arrest Warrants of US & UK & West Europe bankers and politicians complicit with banking center corruption. The story mentioned London bankers working for Goldman Sachs as having their passports lifted. More to come on this showdown. It begs the question who delivers the warrants and what happens if an F.U. is given in reply, especially if armed bodyguards are present. The list reportedly reads like a Who’s Who, not yet seen by Jackass eyes though. A climax is coming, but unclear when.

  3. Do you notice the similarity? By the way the picture of Clinton at Normandy has been almost completely “scrubbed”. The only picture I found you will see.

  4. BP busses in hundreds of temp workers for Obama photo-op

    Excerpt:
News of 11th-hour spruce-up brigade spread rapidly Friday afternoon and infuriated locals. One popular radio host, WWL’s Spud McConnell, suggested that the Coast Guard and the White House may have been involved in setting up the “perfect photo op.”

Oh yes lets not forget the corrupt cops and judges….. this is why I question the Christian militia….what did the cops do? We need someone to protect us from the corrupt government. I wanted to take my case to the supreme court….until this matter of an ineligible citizen came into the president office. Then you hear there are some good cops? A good cop would remove the criminal cops….

  10. I need your help.

Do any of our legal experts here know if there is a comprehensive recap of the Obamacare bill?

I’m particularly interested in the exemption of certain religions and other groups from adherence to the law in regard to buying insurance.

In Nashville the Good Cops gave boCohort former Police Chief serpas a UNANIMOUS NO CONFIDENCE vote. NewsChannel5.com investigated serpas’ FRAUD & serpas was forced to resign and leave Nashville; but it took good Patriots demanding an investigation of serpas.

  14. More distressing news about “Obamacare”. Got an e-mail today telling that all of us retirees with health plans paid by our former employers, are now going to be receiving w-2′s next year with the entire amount paid monthly by our former employers for our health plan coverage per year added to our gross income. Fr’instance, our former employer pays almost $300 per month for my health plan which does not show on my gross income…now, my w-2 will show $3,600 additional added to my gross income yearly, which shifts my husband and I up to a higher tax bracket, and no doubt we will once more have to file a tax return, and most likely pay income taxes. I turned down a secretarial post here in my subdivision which only involved maybe 16-24 hours per months of work just because I did not want to be bounced up to a higher tax bracket. Obama the Abomination strikes again.

  15. Georgetown

Jonah- HCR contains a clause exempting certain religious groups, American Indians, illegal immigrants,> and hardship cases (prison inmates) from ObamaCare’s health insurance mandate.

  16. Georgetown,

    Thanks for the information.

HR 3590 is 2074 pages and is extremely difficult to understand but I think I found the exemptions mentioned, beginning with page 329.

If certain religious groups, American Indians, illegal immigrants, hardship cases and prison inmates are exempt from ObamaCare’s health insurance mandate then the law is clearly unconstitutional. How can a federal law dictate adherence by only some groups of people but not others. Why will some religions be required to buy insurance and others will not? How far back does your American Indian heritage have to reach in order to allow exemption? Illegal immigrants won’t have to pay for insurance but hospitals will be required to treat them anyway?

Can the legal experts here at citizenwells help me to understand why this law should not be thrown out?
